[Solved] SONAR 2017.01 Pre-Release - WRK Files are not played any longer

Hi,

after I installed the new Version, I wanted to Play some of my older files that are still in WRK Format. Until now they worked, even they can not be saved in that Format any longer.
But now, they are loaded, but when Play is pressed, they stuck with the first note. The timer Counts not Forward. If there is a Sound on the first note, this Sound remains forever.....

I installed back the current Version 2016.12, with this all is fine.

I tried to load an old wrk file (no audio, just MIDI and VSTs), and I had the same problem, but only because
the VST used then weren't there anymore. As soon as I loaded new VST outputs,it worked well.
I have no old audio wrk to test.

My wrks do not contain vsts. They are only midi.
If I want to modify them, I save them as cwp, as they cannot be saved as wrk.

Fact is, it works with the 2016.12 release. I really have a lot of those old ones as I was very creative in the 90th with cakewalk apprentice I got with my waveblaster Card :-)

I do not plan to convert all but I Need to Play them from time to time. I let them play with an external midi modul or coolsoft virtual synth and this is fine.

BTW, when I decided last year to buy Sonar Platinum, a reason was: Fine, at least I can Play my wrk (cakewalk format!) files with it.

I do not expect they Support their old Software, but I see no reason why this should not work any longer.

Make sure Metronome is set to Audio in Preferences. If you run into any problems switching it (e.g. the Preferences window misdraws), make sure the Velocity fields for the MIDI metronome have valid values (i.e. not empty/null) before switching.

I've run into problems in the past getting .WRK files to play in SONAR because of this metronome settings issue. Otherwise, I'm not seeing any new problems.

This is a Problem Report section.
I have Sonar Platinum since almost 3 quarter year and never had Problems with my WRK files.
With Version 2017.01 I have Problems - they can be loaded but dont play.
I rolled back to 2016.12 and all is fine - since it was before 2017.

I dont see why I should start to Change any Settings, as all works fine with 2016.12 and before

This is a bug!

I just opened an old wrk file in the 2017.01 Sonar Platinum and after unmuting the tracks it played fine. This was using hardware synths. No softsynths in the file at all. This file is from 2001. It is all MIDI.

Thank you John.

But can you tell me why it does not run with 2017.01 but with all 2016.x ?
I have no VSTs in them, only midi data. My files are from 2001 down to 1991 and None work(ed) any longer.

As I said, I am now back to 2016.12 and all is fine. I "only" cannot update!

I also have about 755 wrk files from Cakewalk PRO Audio 9 (I still use it for MIDI only projects).  They are purely MIDI.  Whether the clock is set to audio or internal, none of them play when loaded in Splat 2017.1.  My work-a-round to open the WRK file in Splat 2017.1 and within that , create an audio track , mute it and put a small audio clip in there.  After doing that, the file will play.

However, when ever I open an old WRK file in Splat , it's usually for the purpose of converting it to a wav file.  Therefore, I create a new audio track anyway. Once I arm the audio track and initiate the record, the file plays while it records the sound output (from an external device) on to the new audio track.

So, for my work flow this is not a biggie.  I'm remaining with 2017.1.  Mind you, I still think this is a bug and needs to be fixed.

Thank you !
Even all try to be helpfull, it is irritatting to get hints relating changing system settings in this case. The behaviour of 2017.01 is obviously different to predecessors relating wrk. And not in a good way.

But when I put it together, it seem People with wrk only containing midi data are affected, because for others it seem to run - when the file contains Audio and/or vsts. It seems the clock is missing.

Are you using hardware synths for playback?

Normally I use Coolsoft Virtual Midi Synth. Frequently a Roland SC 55.

I don't know if this is the problem but I'm seeing in the system specs listed in the signatures that many here are using Win 7. I wonder if that could be a problem?

The files I tested are pure MIDI driving hardware synths. The audio metronome is enough to set the project clock to Audio (interface sample clock) instead of Internal (PC system clock), which is generally preferable but should not be absolutely necessary. I'll check again to see if I can run a project with MIDI metronome and Internal clock.

The 'hints' are to try to figure out what exactly is not working to come up with a 'recipe' that's reproducible for the Bakers. That's the purpose of the Problem Reports forum. Then you can submit a problem report with the specific configuration and steps that reproduce it. It can't be fixed if it can't be reproduced.

Okay, I tested with a pure MIDI project using the MIDI metronome, and indeed, the transport will not run no matter what I do. The Play indicator lights up in the Transport module, and the MIDI track meters show startup controllers being sent, but the Now time does not move.

Seems something is up with 17.01's interaction with the MIDI driver because it lights up all the outputs on my interface and MIDI activity indicators on connected synths, and keeps them lit until the Panic button is pushed.

Another oddity was that it loaded with looping enabled from 1:01:000 thru 1:01:480, but disabling that did not help. Neither did un-checking Stop At Project End.

It's almost like the project is stuck in a loop at 1:01:000, sending the startup controllers. I tried to watch the MIDI Outs using MIDI OX, but have not used it for a while, and wasn't able to see anything.

As OP indicated, the same WRK file loads and plays normally in 16.12 with no modifications. The funny thing is that a new pure MIDI project created in 17.01 plays fine, and I cannot find the difference in project configurations. Re-saving the WRK as a CWP and re-opening did not help.

Bottom line: Confirmed there's a problem playing pure MIDI WRK files using the MIDI metronome in 17.01 Early Release.

Thank you very much bundlefly, for your support in reproducing this behaviour and analyzing the circumstances that could lead to this .

I guess sometimes I loose patience too early or don't understand the intention correct. Take my excuses & thanks for clarfication.

Yes,I use Windows 7 and I do not plan to change it much earlier then necessary. I already tried Windows 10 and I do not see I will change in the near future. Besides, I do not think that this behaviour is related to W7.  Bundlefly & promidi experience the same, and bundlefly described a real perfect way to reproduce it.

Thank you all !

I am happy to confirm, that the wrk files can be played with the current 2017.01 release (not the preview)

Thank you for taking care.

I had to install the Coolsosft midisynth again after installing the actual release. It had disappeared from the midi mapper list ..... But this hapened somemonths ago also. strange but not necessary related.

Compliment for support & development taking care of most issues already.

Thank you, Keith.
