[Solved] Send Pan Follow Track Pan Not Working Since X1...?

I just discovered the option to have the send pan Follow Track Pan in the context menu for the Send Pan is not working. The Send Pan control gets locked, but does not follow changes to the Track Pan. I wasn't sure when this broke so I tested X1 - X3e, and none of them worked. The last version that worked was 8.5, and I think it was a new feature in 8.0.

I forgot this option existed, and have usually used Control Groups to get this functionality when needed. I found at least one report of it on the forum, and figure it must be reported already...? I'm surprised it hasn't come up more often, but I guess it's rare that it makes a big difference to the sound of a project so it would be easy to miss.

Hi Dave. I haven't seen you for awhile. Its good to see you here. I can't believe you haven't received any feedback. It could be because you have such a great reputation in solving everyone else's problems no one thinks they are competent enough to help.

I hope by bumping this someone will answer.

In my case, it's that Brundlefly is not the kind of person who blames anything he doesn't understand on a SONAR bug. So if he thinks he's found a bug, I'm 99.999% sure he has. Hence, no need to reply...but I'll check at some point to confirm.

You made my point. He knows what he is talking about! If he says its so then it is so.

That's a very astute observation, because the project's audio does what it's supposed to do. The send pan DOES follow the track pan. However the send pan slider graphic doesn't reflect the change.

Please give this a try and see if you can confirm.

The bummer is that it seems as if the bugs that actually exist are the ones that take the longest to get fixed.

Not much of a "bug" if it's taken years for people to notice because the function itself works exactly as expected.

If someone decides to have the send pan follow the channel pan, then they would use the channel pan to adjust the send panning. The send pan becomes irrelevant, because you've already told SONAR's audio to do what the channel pan does.

Besides, tying them together graphically opens up a can of worms with respect to grouping because you can still have the pan send be part of a group. Follow channel pan overrides the group assignment (as expected) but does not alter it. If you were to remove following the channel pan, you would want the pan send setting to be defined by the group to which it belonged prior to setting it follow channel pan. Besides when listening with your eyes instead of your ears, you can always group the send pan and channel pan if you want them to move together. Following channel pan is a special case, and obviously the Bakers treated it as such.

Send following channel pan is the same concept as a send being post fader.  You wouldn't expect to see the send control turning as you move the fader, why would you expect to see the send.pan control turning when you turn the channel.pan control?

I just thought that's the way it's "supposed to be" ;-)
The send pan is just greyed out...

I *have* noticed that sometimes you need to Center your track pan before you link your send pan to it - then when you pan your track, the send follows it OK.

If your track is already panned, and then you tell the send to follow it - I think it doesn't really follow it sometimes...

"Follow" is really the wrong term to use.  This is one of the advantages of growing up with analogue gear and real mixers.

If you imagine the signal path through a channel strip, I mean a real one with wires and everything, you get the signal going to the fader, then the pan pot, then the bus routing switches.   The pre/post switch for a send switches it before or after the fader, but still before the pan. To "follow" the pan you need a stereo aux send and then tap the signal after the channel pan.  As you can see, for this to work any pan control on the aux send needs to be defeated.

In software it's much easier,  you just make the aux pan "copy" the channel pan to get the same effect.  But for it to work the visible aux pan control must be disabled or you have a possible conflict between it and the channel pan control.

Yes, I just checked the signal flow chart, and see that Post includes Pan. Makes sense, and I my ears tell me it's working. But by that logic it shouldn't be necessary to enable Follow Track Pan; that should be the default, and disabling it should be the option. Intuitively I expected that "Follow" meant the controls would be linked just as they are when grouping.

It's all good in any case; should have done some more listening before I posted.

Actually, I disagree. Now a lot of people know all about the follow pan function, which they might not have been aware of otherwise, as well as the logic of the signal flow.

I agree that that (following track pan) should be the default.

I always forget to set it.... ;-)
