[Solved] "Setup detected that your application is currently running"; Won't run or install

I'm trying to run the installer for Platinum 2016.12, and I'm getting the message:

"Setup has detected that your application is currently running".

This is after a cold re-boot!

...The reason I'm running the installer in the first place is because SONAR refused to run this morning. It would either hang with no visual evidence of it running (except in the Task Manager) or it would display the small rectangular splash screen and hang at that point.

I tried a cold re-boot, same behavior. Uh-oh, I thought. Perhaps I should try a re-install.
The most frustrating thing is that last night I was working on a project, no problems, made some good progress. Now... no joy.

I get the same message if I attempt to re-install 2016.11.
I get the same message if I run the installer as administrator.

Note - I've been running the installers directly, outside of the Command Center, since Jan 2015.

I downloaded the latest Command Center and installed it, and it is requesting a reboot. I'll do that and try installing from there. Update to follow.

In the meantime, any advice would be gratefully received. Help!
I'm running on Windows 10 64-bit; 8 GB RAM.

After updating SONAR using the Command Center (still not a fan of that app), it appeared to successfully run the installer.
When I double-clicked on the SONAR icon, I get the splash screen, followed by
    "SONARPLT.exe has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

    Yeah, right.

    ...this is incredibly frustrating.

The initial problem reads like a driver issue. Reinstalling SONAR would not address a bad interface driver.

    Thanks for the thought, scook.
I'm wondering whether Sonar has left a "lock" file or something in the registry... I hope I don't have to re-install hardware drivers and stuff. This system has been rock-solid for, well, years.

I doubt it will make a difference but you can try renaming the ini files in your SONAR user directory or hold the CTRL key while opening SONAR (assuming the reinstall did not run the personalization process).

I was getting that "Setup has detected that your application is currently running" error when I updated to the 2016.12 and I got around it by booting up with my sound card (old MOTU 828 mkII) off and installing then rebooting with the MOTU on.

I have a feeling I have old driver issues along with my old hardware but I'm up and working with the new Sonar update and I had been having a bunch of problems prior with the last update/Win10 dealio.

    Xiwix, interesting.

I'll try disabling my Echo Layla 3G, rebooting, then re-installing SONAR. Maybe there's a hardware failure in the sound card? that happened overnight? that is causing the driver to send garbage to sonar and causing these strange errors.

Disabling the audio interface hardware didn't make a difference the first time I tried it, but I just tried a second time and also renamed AUD.INI to AUD.INI-back.

I can now run SONAR Platinum although of course it complains about no audio interface. This is progress.
Interestingly, Command Center thinks its version is 2016.12. (it may be right but I wouldn't be confident about that).

I am going to try running the latest standalone installer ...  OK, that ran to completion. SONAR thinks it is 2016.12.

Now to re-enable the audio interface driver... (and reboot)

OK.... um... now it's all working.

Thank you, scook and especially Xiwix.
