[Solved] Sound on Sound not working with takes ?

I'm in the middle of recording some audio and using multiple takes, but I can't get sound on sound recording to work. My existing material gets erased. I have tried opening a new project and first record using only one take and SOS works fine, but when I add a new take and try the same it erase the old recordings even though SOS is on. Is it supposed to be like that or a bug ?

I had a similar issue this weekend as well.

I had recorded some takes on a lane and wanted to punch in a part. I switched to sound on sound mode from comping mode so that the vocalist could hear the take up until the punch in point.  I noticed that only the most recent take was kept instead of creating a new lane.  It would mute the previous takes but not create a new one. I don't know if this is intended or a bug as well.

I did not have to thoroughly investigate this as I was trying to get the recordings done. I did think that maybe it had to do with having take lanes existing.  Maybe I should have just created a new track to do the overdubs on.

Sorry this doesn't help much except to say that I had a similar experience.

I just tested and could not repro a problem in the current release of Platinum (using Artist should not make a difference). Both regular Sound on Sound layering and Punch recording created new lanes with all clips active as expected.

Do you have 'Create New Lanes on Overlap' enabled in Recording preferences? It shouldn't matter, as SONAR shouldn't allow overlaps anyway. I've seen some odd behavior in the past with it unchecked but overwriting takes was not the problem. Nevertheless, I recommend keeping it checked.

I may be misunderstanding the intent here but in comping mode the singer can still hear the track until the punch point. I always use comping mode this way. Hit space bar to play and then R to start the recording where I want it to (or set up punch points).

Well I upgraded to Sonar Pro and my problem is still there. Further more after I upgraded I'm no longer able to mute other tracks while recording. I was able to do that in Artist. I think I will just create new tracks and not use takes.

    Dave is right.
you did not mention if you looked in recording preferences ?
did you check to make sure 'Create New Lanes on Overlap' was checked?

if you do not have this checked you are simply recording sound on sound to the same track.
    (clip on top of clip)

I use this sometimes as an effect (dual solos) to thicken the sound.
it saves me from creating 3 tracks. I just record them all on top of each other in the same track.

-do a test and record a part.
-then record again over that same part.
-drag the last recorded clip over to the right.
-you should see another clip that was underneath it.

I think I totally misunderstood the concept of takes. All good.

    oh that's good man.
as long as you are having fun that's all that matters.
Takes do require a bit of understanding. so does the 3 recording modes.
    enjoy.
