[Solved] UNABLE TO LOAD PERSONAL SAMPLES IN THE BROWSER FOR SONAR X2

Good Day, I am new to the forum

i want to say that this is a simple problem but it has persisted for quite a few months now.. I have ignored it for the most part because I haven't been using Sonar heavily but now I am and this is pretty annoying

As simple as I can put it.. I can load any of Sonar's sounds and content in the browser that comes with it but none of my own. Any time I try to load my own, X2 stops responding and I have to close it down.

Has anyone ever experienced this?
How do you resolve this?

Thanks in advance for your help

What format are the files? Where did the files come from?

chawilcomm...Has anyone ever experienced this?...

No, I haven't, chawilcomm - That browser in Sonar can be directed to anywhere you want, and then the location can be saved so you have a direct route from then on.  I had a recent project where I needed to set up a large number of sound clips, and it worked perfectly to set up a link to that folder and insert the clips throughout the project - All exactly as per the way it's supposed to work.  I was working with .wav files, some 24 bit, some 16 - Sonar doesn't care what resolution the files are.

Scook has asked the only logical question - What's the nature of your files?  Aren't they in some standard audio format that we usually work with?

Do you mean you can't load samples "in" the browser or "from" the browser?

Also note you can drag samples from a project into the browser in addition to point the browser to file locations.

I wrote article about the browser for Sound on Sound. It's accessible to subscribers and will "go public" in a few months.

Mostly .wav some mp3. They all are on a separate hard drive from the cakewalk content.

I mean I can't load up my own sample collection in the browser. So far as cakewalk content I can load in and from the browser just fine.

I didn't think this was a common issue because even to me it seemed ridiculous that it happens but it does. Especially considering the fact that I was able to do this at first. I have tried to do an uninstall and re-install to see if that will help. I even tried looking into the properties of the folders in  my samples hard drive to see if maybe the read only function was selected and that was what stopped Sonar's Browser from loading up my samples properly and made no progress there either...

keep hitting the up arrow in the sonar browser until you are at the highest level, which would be the same as "my computer" in windows explorer. this should show all your drives and allow you to navigate to the drive you want.

Ive tried that hoping that it would work and it didn't. I have it set up in the media dropdown for faster navigation and even thought that if I could delete it from the dropdown it would work but I couldn't figure out how to remove it from that list.

I have covered all of the basics. I sent in a request to tech support over a week ago and haven't heard anything back as well.
Ill probably try an uninstall again but make sure I remove everything from the roaming appdata folders..
Do you know all of the steps it takes to COMPLETELY remove sonar from a computer?

Just substitute X2 for X1 - but I don't believe this will solve your problem.
I think it's something far more basic/simple than anything needing a reinstall.

That's the sense I get too. The browser has always been bulletproof for loading my own files.

I'm open for any other tips that you may have. One thing did happen yesterday. I loaded up a file and attempted to open my own samples again in the browser.. Left the house for a few hours and when I came back I was able to navigate through my sample drive.
So.. I closed X2 down and opened it back up to try and see how long it took and 20 minutes later it was still didn't do anything. Usually after a few minutes I would see the (not responding) on the top screen

I suppose it COULD be a permissions problem.

Are you running Sonar "As Administrator"?

Could it be a problem because I have both the 32bit and 64bit installed on my computer?

what happens if you try to drag-n-drop one of your files from windows expolrer? crash sonar, or does it play? do these files play in other apps like wmp or vlc?

also, are you running the latest driver for your graphics card?

Hi Charles,

Do you have a floppy drive configured on this system? If so, does disabling it in Device Manager help with the problem? To disable the disk drive, right click my computer (my PC or This PC) and choose device manager. Expand the Floppy disk drives list, right click the floppy disk drive and choose disable. If you have any CD/DVD ROM media in your disk drive, try removing those from the tray.

Thanks!

I would not have thought of that. come to find out I did have a dvd in my cd/dvd rom. Pulling it out didn't work. also I didn't see a floppy drive installed on my system... I went ahead and did a total uninstall as per instructions with with a post earlier and this didn't help. The only thing that really bugs me is this. Let me tell you what system I am using just in case this may help

I have 3 drives all at 7200 rpm. Main, Sample and Project drive. I am running Win7 Home premium 64bit. with a Sandy Bridge i7 and 8gb RAM. I am not too certain if my audio interface driver would matter but with that I am using a Presonus Firestudio Project. As stated earlier the only other major software that would utilize around the same amount of resources as X2 is Studio One 2.6....

I did another uninstall and re-install with X2 but this time I followed the instructions posted here

this didn't help at all.. What kills me is the fact that I have pointed the browser in X2 to my separate  project folder and I can breeze through that like nothing... I can breeze though my main drive like nothing and any music albeit .wav and mp3 can play and drag and drop just fine in the browser.  This bugs me because it is just my sample drive that stalls out until I click on anything with my mouse, whether it be in Sonar or me trying to pull something else up in Win7 all together. I thought it was the hard drive itself but I have checked the properties and compared them to my other two hard drives and I have no problem with it when I navigate to it through S1 2.6

I hope this helps

could this be a usb2 - usb3 issue? are the drives the same type, or do you have usb3 drive plugged into usb2 port or vice versa?

Can you run chkdsk on that drive, is windows update up to date? What happens if you disable your virus scanner? Can you paste the main file path to your media? Cheers

[image]file:///C:/Users/Charles%20Comer/Pictures/X2%20Folder%20Locations.png[/image]Hopefully you will be able to see it.. I tried turning off my security software which I am running Microsoft Security Essentials and that didn't work either... I also tried pointing it directly to the sample folder in the preferences window and that didn't work... Honestly right now it just seems like I am stuck with this problem. I timed it earlier and if I don't touch anything on my computer it will finally get into my sample drive after about 30 minutes.

This has to be one of the strangest glitches I've ever seen reported!  Your thread is quite a drama, chawilcomm - I'm feeling for you - such frustration!

Since nobody can figure out the issue, and I sure can't - I've always been able to use that Sonar browser to go wherever I want and instantly open any audio file - then it looks like you'll need to work with the routine of opening a separate window and dragging in audio that way, since you said that works.  If you have two monitors, that's really easy, just a bit trickier with 1 monitor because of the limited screen space.

Best of luck!

I couldn't agree more about this being a very strange issue. Unnecessary if you ask me.  also I edited that to just delete the pic all together.. hahaha.... Pretty much I have the wav folder pointed to the default installation settings that it all that it shows....

But listen I thank you all for the help. I contacted tech support for them to get back to me and we will see how that goes... Otherwise I will just go back to using Studio One and debate whether or not to get rid of X2 or to keep it until I feel like upgrading to X3 which won't be any time soon....

Again Thanks

--?  That image is so small, it blurs out totally when I try to zoom - But I recognize it as the page in Preferences where you list the locations for various things in Sonar - Why did you post that?  You're not trying to use That for directing where your browser menu goes are you?

OH, OK - But that isn't where you set up the path to your media-- That's the Preference page which by default just lists the locations of Sonar's various components.

To open your own media, you just use the left hand browser menu in the browser that comes up by default on the right side of Sonar's main screen.-- That's where you've been trying to open your files isn't it?

OK - Well, your problem is mysterious, as I said before.-- I'm still not at all clear why you thought that Preference page was showing the path to your personal media.  That Preference page has nothing to do with the issue at hand, which is to simply open the Media tab on your browser (opens with "B") and navigate to the right file location.--

I was unsure.... so i am glad that is cleared up.....Apparently I have one more thing to try.. I turned my security off when I installed it initially but don't remember doing so when I installed the update. I am going to try a complete uninstall and re-install with Security Essentials off and see if going that route will make a difference because it worked just fine until a few months ago.  This is a great DAW so hopefully this works..
