[Solved User Error] Drum Replacer throws error message telling me to upgrade.

Edit: Apparently I had downloaded all the Sonar updates that allow Drum Replacer to function but amongst all the feverish installing of other goodies (including Drum Replacer itself) I neglected to install the actual Sonar updates. Essentially I was still on Dorchester when I thought I was on Gloucester. Drum Replacer does not work on versions predating Everett. Thanks, scook and others for pointing me toward the solution. I'm leaving the OP up for anyone who encoutners this in the future...

Original Post...

=======================================================================

So this is a weird one and I'm posting this preemptively because I'm not sure yet whether I actually AM locked out of DR... but this is the message I just got after creating my first Drum Replacer Region FX clip...

"Sorry, Drum Replacer cannot be used in earlier versions of SONAR, or non Cakewalk hosts.

Please upgrade to SONAR Platinum to unlock full functionality"

As I said I am posting this preemptively because the DR app opened and it seems to have analyzed the stereo drum file I am about to hack away at. I have not gone further yet but am about to so I will update of course with any weirdness.

I am of course on a fully legit and registered (AFAIK) copy of Sonar Platinum (Gloucester I think... which I snagged in large part to get at the Drum Replacer module) so this is a rather odd message.

If anyone has any ideas on why I'm getting this message I would love to know and I will provide any details needed. Can't think of anything pertinent that might cause this.

...

hmm... but I am an offline installer (don't have CCC installed) and Gloucester nor DR asked for verification if it is needed BUT I've never needed to verify anything after the first install (which is a 12 month "all in" purchase... so it's bought outright).

Anyhoo... gonna see if it actually works. Might just be an erroneous message but I'd still like to get rid of it.

Cheers.

Rather than guess, check which version of SONAR you are actually running by looking at the about screen. DR is reporting you are running an earlier version.

I notice DR is version specific to Sonar a while back.It used to crash if there was a mismatch. Think I brought it up in the forums a while back looks like the bakers have now thrown in a check.

People downgrading from Platinum to pro might find this interesting...

Re: First time using Drum Replacer. It throws error message telling me to upgrade. Whut? 2015/10/28 17:43:52 (permalink)
It's version 21.3.00 Build 20 (would be helpful if the nicknames got included in the splash screens).

I have no idea what name version it is but I definitely installed a DR inclusive version (and I'm pretty sure Gloucester was the one that had the fixes added).

Anyway... the detection worked and I can futz with it but I'm not getting any audio output response. I'm reading the manual entry now to get more info on how exactly it should be working (already watched all the CakeTV vids).

Kind of hard to tell whether it's installed properly or not. If it wasn't would it load/do the detection? Is lack of audio output what happens if it's not registered?

I'm gonna keep reading the manual to see if I can get it to do something.

You Are running Dorchester. The name of the release was added after that release.

The version nicknames did get added to the help>about screen a couple of updates back.

Is there any particular reason why you're not updating the main program? That version number seems a ways back. Mine's 21.9.00 Build 40.

I bet that's the issue. DR got some significant updates and fixes in versions after that. I'm guessing the fixes were in both DR and Sonar itself, so that would necessitate a more recent core program (I assume).

That's like six updates you're missing, plus some interim patches. There's been a LOT of improvements in those six updates.

When running older versions and not using the Command Center, best place to see the names and version numbers is by expanding the download area for SONAR Platinum in https://www.cakewalk.com/My-Account/Products

Sonnuva...!!!!

Really? I swear I installed after I downloaded the last time (or in my twisted little memory I did). Maybe I fudged it up or something went wonky.

Anyway that would likely explain it. Too late in the day to mess with this now and I've actually been more interested in Jamaican Plains anyway so I guess I'll deal with this in the morning.

I'll update this tomorrow after I get this sorted.

Thanks, all.

Yes, DR was released with Everett so the DR error message is correct.

And for the curious... I don't update every version. I have no need to... obviously because I've been happily noodling away up until now without noticing I wasn't even as updated as I thought.

Re: First time using Drum Replacer. It throws error message telling me to upgrade. Whut? 2015/10/29 15:01:31 (permalink)
Just an update. Sorry I got a late start today (feeling like crud... it happens).

This was indeed a result of me not having installed the necessary SONAR versions required to run Drum Replacer. I thought I had last time I accessed my store account but after looking through my files I had actually downloaded ALL versions of SPlat and ALL the extras associated with those versions and installed ALL the extras but had not actually installed any of the SONAR updates themselves (which is why I was getting the message).

Essentially I was still on Dorchester when I thought I was on Gloucester. Total user error/Beepso brainfart. Perhaps one of the downfalls of being an "offline" installer without CCC but I seriously did not notice until this DR thing so no bigs.

Due to the fact I'm feeling crappy and derpy today I did not go through the process of downloading and installing Jamaican Plains (might do the this week) but instead installed Gloucester which I already had in my wacky "Installers" folder. It was the version I intended to install anyway and I wanted to keep with my system of creating Windows restore points before updating SONAR on my (mostly offline) DAW. This way once I install JP I can use Windows restore to go back to either Gloucester (the new install) or to Dorchester (the version I've been happily and apparently obliviously using up until today).

Two things to report that are semi related to the topic at hand...

1) I did notice that after installing Gloucester my current project opened quicker and without the momentary "whiteout" I had been getting on Dorchester. That's nice. Hoping that maybe it'll solve the problem I've been having where Sonar doesn't release itself in a timely fashion after closing the app (I have been having to wait for a minute or so after closing before I can reopen Sonar and the time needed gets longer the more complex the project is).

2) Drum Replacer unfortunately, in this case, is not doing what I hoped it would. However I am pushing it likely FAR beyond what it is capable of. Essentially I am attemping to take a full kit stereo file (all drum peices being played at once) and isolating individual kit peices for replacement/MIDI  conversion. This drum part is, unfortunately, just far too busy for that to occur it seems. There are just way too many toms, snare and kick parts all blasting away at once (think Slayer drums on meth) so DR seems to be making a noble effort it's just too many transients for it to deal with. Yes I've futz with all the Freq, Thresh, Interval, etc controls and even went so far as to try to make the task easier for the DR app by isolating the kick using R-Mix then running the resulting file through DR (I bounced the R-Mix'd version then ran that through DR if anyone is curious about the technique).

Anyway... it's not doing what I would like for THIS track but was a good experiment anyway. I think if I could get even kick + snare + overheads as source material (the second most simplest micing setup for drums) then what I'm attempting could work rather well through DR (even for crazy blasto stuff). Maybe not but I have some material setup exactly like that I'll be trying it on.

For more laid back stuff I'm sure it's fine. My only concern I think would be potential "flamming" between the originals and the samples but I also see a little vertical transient marker in the "sample" area that could maybe be moved around to eliminate that. Not sure how the MIDI export would respond though.

Just some thoughts on DR and other general crap so as not to leave this thread as a total derp dump.

Cheers and thanks all (especially scook) for pointing out what the problem was.

I'm just one of those "clever" idiots methinks. Been screwing me up my whole life really.

When I do screw up though I'm certainly not going to dig my heels in and insist that everyone else is wrong and that the doo doo in my draws was put there by some malicious third party out to get me that absconded unseen into the night.

That doo doo is mine. I own it and therefore will eat it like the shamed and repentent canine I am.
