Of course you have to convert MIDI to audio. MIDI is just an instruction set to tell a synth what to play, MP3 is a compressed audio format. However, there is no built in ability of Sonar to export directly to MP3 by default. You would need to add an MP3 encoder or export to wave and do the conversion with an external program.
How are you hearing the MIDI that you recorded? If you are hearing it, then there is audio somewhere. If it is coming out of a keyboard synth or instrument controller you are playing, then you can only capture that sound by connecting the audio out from that instrument into the audio in of your audio interface and recording to an audio track in Sonar. If you are hearing a softsynth play within Sonar, then presumably you have set the softsynth output to a Sonar audio track, in which case the thing you need to export is the audio track.
