[Solved] Why can't I drag audio from Explorer into Sonar? (X3e)

This used to work for me at one point but recently I've found that I can't drag any kind of audio file from Windows Explorer into Sonar. No matter where I try to drop it (either on an existing audio track or in a blank space in the clips pane), I just get the "restricted" icon and it won't drop. I know I can drag files from the browser, but dragging from Explorer should work and it worries me that I can't do it. Any ideas?

Try it when running Sonar as administrator. Or if you are already doing it try not running Sonar as administrator.

I'm running as administrator. Running not as administrator fixes the problem. However, I'd prefer to run Sonar as administrator because not doing so introduces other problems. If I can't drag from Explorer into Sonar while running as administrator, well, that sucks!

Yeah the bug has been reported. I'd try and get away from running as admin, rather open up permissions in the registry for the plugins that need it if at all possible.

I run as admin also. Why would this cause problems? I thought you needed to do this for certain things to be written to file/access files.

I have the same problem.  I really miss dragging because it's soooooo much easier than working through the browser.

Danke, Sandmannchen!! That explains a lot of (non-Sonar) issues I had when helping out a friend who was running Windows 8. It was driving me crazy.

Thanks for posting this question.   This started happening when I moved to w8. I used words yesterday when my yearn to drag was thwarted.

Another good reason to have a dedicated audio computer.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure, but I do know that I've had problems with some VST's in the past (since forgotten about) which were solved by running as administrator. I think Dimension Pro might have been one of them.

The only issue I've had is registering Dim Pro and Rapture. Once done with that you don't need admin.

Also if you need Pentagon away from admin here is the info:

i was gonna suggest internet options and setting em to default.. which what I've done in the past for other programs that start acting funny with regard to windows drag / drop etc generally. thats in win7 though.. did take me ages to figure it out though and it was by pure chance..

windows being bigger / behind the task bar is another annoyance I get with turbo lister, but i digress.

I would not say this is [Solved], because we are at an impasse:
  1. Run X3e as administrator does not allow Drag & Drop audio files from Windows Explorer.
  2. Run X3e as NOT administrator does not allow some external VST plugins to work.
The solution would be to allow Drag & Drop even with Sonar as an administrator mode.

What I do is run as administrator, and make the Desktop a content location in the browser. It's easier to drag from the browser than minimize or resize SONAR and drag from the desktop, or open up an external drive or whatever.

The only time I have had to run any CW product as administrator is the continued un-fixed DP registration bug.

Other than that, there should be NO reason to run as administrator, which affects all kinds of windows settings, and can result in many annoyances.

This is not a Sonar issue, it is a question of Windows not allowing a process with a lower security level to pass control to a process of higher security level. Allowing such behavior is dangerous since malware could then elevate its control over a process running as administrator, thus defeating the protection designed into UAC. When you drag and drop you are using Windows Explorer (WE) which is always started at the level of the logged in user. When you run a program as administrator, you are running it with privileges not even granted to a user who is logged in as a member of the Administrators Group. The grown up way of dealing with this intelligent Windows limitation is to use Sonar's File>Open dialog or the Sonar Media Browser to open the file.

It is possible to open Windows Explorer using "run as administrator" and files will drag from that particular window to a program with elevated privileges, but any new window spawned from that elevated window will not retain elevated privileges-so a search result window popping up from a search initiated within an elevated WE window will not work. You can also install another file explorer utility and start that with "run as administrator." I have been able to drag and drop from FreeCommander XE started "run as administrator," to elevated programs, but frankly only as an exercise. I almost never drag and drop anything to a program, and only occasionally move files that way.

Finally it is possible to stop the Windows Explorer process and restart it with administrator privileges, but that is just plain crazy, and unless you are running only a single account member of the administrators group (already a bad idea from a security standpoint) is likely to cause consternation.

I think I definitely found the solution : DISABLE UAC!

Just follow the first post of this: http://www.eightforums.com/system-security/5160-tutorial-how-make-windows-8-understand-you-administrator.html

This not only solves the problem of this thread, but also all that hassle of getting forcing Windows to run a lot of applications as an administrator.

Having to run most any program as "administrator" is the result of a windows security issue, or a software program issue.

The user should NEVER have to do this for most any properly configured program.

There is little to be gained by doing so. And much annoyance can result.

If you have to run any current program as an administrator something is wrong.

Running windows explorer elevated may "solve" the "problem" of running Sonar as an administrator, but it is not appropriate.

And it increases security risks.

Work arounds are not answers.

No security risks when this computer is used only by me and no one else, when I'm not in a LAN, when all the software I use are reliable, when I use a good antivirus and firewall, when I got healthy habits for internet access, when I have a good backup routine.
Not afraid to be happy.

There is always a security risk.

A couple of years ago a major AV company released disks that were infected during replication.

It is always possible for any software company's products to be infected on the distribution servers.

It is NOT possible to assure local scanning software will catch the latest exploits.

Elevation of any windows process can open the door.

Ask yourself, "Why am I having to do what well over 98% of Sonar users do not have to do?"

And then provide a workaround?

Time to buy a vowel.

I do not want to create a dilemma here.
Although I have 33 years of computer experience, I do not own the truth.
I just put a solution to a problem that is not solved by the Cakewalk.
So, as I said before, I think disable UAC is the most flexible solution, as long as you are in a controlled environment, as I mentioned above.
Otherwise, we will always have to live in paranoia.

No security risks [...] when I use a good antivirus and firewall, when I got healthy habits for internet access

Antivirus software and firewalls are highly overrated pieces of software.
http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/new-research-comparing-how-security.html

Security experts don't rate antivirus software even in the top 5 most important things.

As for healthy habits, that isn't always enough.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2950578/security/microsoft-rushes-out-emergency-security-update-to-fix-critical-windows-flaw.html
Merely visiting a website with one of the malicious fonts can infect your system (unless you got the patch last week). These don't necessarily have to be untrustworthy websites; otherwise reasonable sites can get compromised indirectly, maybe via hackers, maybe via their advertising network.

It's your computer, so use it however you like, but the best advice to give to people in general is not to run anything as administrator unless completely necessary.
