[Solved] X3d video problems - revert to X3c?

Hi,
Installing the X3d patch has screwed up all my projects that had video in them, (either load with 'No Video' or thumbnails all green and crashes Sonar X3 when trying to play)

Is there a way to revert to X3c? (I kept the X3c patch when I downloaded it in November, but when I tried installing that patch it doesn't overwrite X3d patch)

Thanks

I'm not sure but Sonar may have made a Windows Restore Point before installing the patch. You could try rolling back to that point. You shouldn't lose any files. Otherwise I think the only way is to uninstall X3, reinstall it then patch it up to C.

You should probably get a hold of support though before fiddling with all this. They might have a better solution for you. Video is supposed to be working BETTER with this patch. Not breaking things. Cheers.

No need to cal support, Beepster is correct is saying you can either use a restore point or uninstall Sonar completely and then re-installing sonar up to Xc

I checked the Widows Restore and there wasn't one around the time of the x3d patch install, and I'm not sure I want to lose recent installations/upgrades or re-install all of X3 again.

I've always had problems getting Video to work in Sonar, (usually had to re-encode or convert with 3rd party software to get it to load properly), so I was really excited to try out the new video improvements promised with X3d!

With my current project I had to re-encode the original MOV file sent to me by the Production House Editor to an AVI file using Avidemux. (I don't care about quality of video in Sonar as I only use it to get sync then export music). The original MOV file won't load directly into Sonar X3d either, (so I guess most of the new video improvments have been for Miscrosoft Video Formats - unfortunately most Production houses in London use Mac).

The MOV file details:
Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
Resolution: 1280x720
Frame rate: 25fps
Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV

Well the reason I mentioned calling support is because perhaps they can figure out a way to get these files working with the new video improvements. I'm assuming these are files created from BEFORE the patch, right? Kind of like how we have problems sometimes getting older projects to work in the latest version of Sonar (which is why I just finish what I'm working on in whatever version it was created in before moving on). They may know a way of reimporting the video so you can take advantage of the improvements.

I'm not a video guy (yet) but I'm quite happy they took the time to work on this stuff because there are a LOT of old vids I want to sync to audio or simply remaster the audio on and from all I've read I was probably going to have to purchase a separate editor to make it happen smoothly.

Another solution if you have not incorporated many of the new effects that came with X3 into your project is maybe trying to open the project in X2 or X1 which AFAIK have the same video elements of the pre "d" versions of X3 and doing your work there. That way you don't have to rollback or reinstall to finish what you are doing.

Have you tried starting a new video project with X3d? Does it cause the same problems?

After rereading your followup I'm not sure... because as I said I'm not a video guy. It seems perhaps you have tried loading it into a new project. So if that is the case and it is not working then perhaps there is a file format issue that maybe Cake will be aware of.

User gswitz did some tests a couple weeks ago but I didn't fully read those threads. Perhaps do a google search and they'll provide some more insight.

Sorry... not really a video guy. Good luck.

I did a full uninstall and installed prior versions before X3D That only took a few minutes and was easiest for me..

You may find this useful...

http://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation/default.aspx?Doc=SONAR%20X3&Lang=EN&Req=NewFeatures.02.html

If I'm reading that and your posted file info MPEG-4 should be working. It's all Greek to me though. There is also an external link to more info about the new MMF thingie that is supposedly what makes this new video handling superior. You may be able to glean what you need to from that.

And isn't Quicktime an Apple/Mac released video format? It says it supports files created with that as well so there MUST be some kind of crossover here that'll allow mac generated video files to load into Sonar. It would be kind of useless if not because as you said many video companies use macs (I used to work for one but not as a smarty pants computer guy... I basically scraped poop, puke and boogers off the walls but there were indeed a lot of fancy macs in the building).

Cheers.

Don't roll back or uninstall yet!!!! First, check this link.

Also, SONAR’s video engine now defaults to using Microsoft’s Media Foundation framework rather than DirectShow. Solving your problem may be as simple as switching from Media Foundation to DirectShow, as described in this link.

Let us know whether either of these solutions works for you.

Could the frame rate be causing issues? If you don't care about the vid quality maybe getting the fps down would make it play nicer with Sonar. I have no idea though but I'm just thinking perhaps the combo of the vid and resource usage by Sonar and a new unproven set of video stuff trying to work all at once might be sucking up resources.

What are your specs? Can you toss the Performance module into the Control Bar to see if you are maxing anything out and/or check your resource monitor while you try this?

I can tell you what is acceptable for video but that might give some insight to others who are watching the thread. Cheers.

And there you have it. I had a feeling there would be some insight to this on the Cake end of things. They have been working on this pretty hard from what I've gathered.

@Anderton - Thank you soooo much!! You were spot on with the DirectShow Video Engine fix - I edited the config file as directed in your second link and now my previous projects all work fine!

Many thanks to everyone for their advice and input - I'm very relieved I don't have to do a re-install of X3!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I hear that. When I was actually a working dude holidays were my busiest times for various reasons (holding down businesses while everyone was of doing their thing, playing shows, picking up extra jobs doing security/bartender/etc because no one else would take those shifts).

Now it's all just another day. Got my CA2A thingy with my freebie code (which took quite awhile because I guess the store is getting slammed), downloaded the "d" patch (but am waiting to install because "c" hasn't caused any problems... nor did "b") and I'm about try laying down some "drum" tracks with my pK now that I've forage for my nuts and berries for the month and don't have to worry about remaining perfectly still so as not to completely cripple myself.

Should be a good month.

But... you are amongst the land of the living. You should go have some fun... because fun is... well, fun! :-)

Dammit! Now I want to go hang with my friends and be a cool guy again.

This of course is a complete impossibility for an avalanche of reasons. That's what I get for thinking about stuff.

Stupid brain.
