(Solved)Where Can I get some Decent Free Sax?

Seriuosly, I need a sporano sax, and TTS-1 won't work for me, and I'm having trouble activating my copy of Bandstand, and old NI midi set I got for 100.00 several years ago. Hopefully I will get TTS-1 working, or maybe some more registry hacks will get Bandstand working; but in the meantime does anyone know where I can get some good free saxes? Dim Pro has good Alto and Tenor, but no Soprano.

AIR Xpand!2 has presets for soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone sax in the "Brass + Woodwind" category.  The plugin is 4 part mult-timbral so you could even set up small sections or layers.

Not free, but it is $4.99 at PluginBoutique.  https://www.pluginboutiqu...nstrument/1560-Xpand-2

Another possibility is if you own Sample Tank. The Brass Section is not the best, but OK .

"Decent sax" and "free" sadly don't go together. In fact, you can still pay quite a bit of money, and fall short of "decent" in the saxophone dept.

Pretty tough instrument to sample/model/fake, I guess.

I'm sure others may know of the hidden gems, sorry for not being helpful, but I've always had a gripe about faux hornage. It's frustrating my entitled sense of immediate gratification.  :)

    cheers,

Well, I downloaded the DSK and Xpand! stuff. I can't figure out how to install the DSK. Do you just drag it into folders? There is no installer. I succeeded installing the Xpand! plugin, but every instrument has way too much vibrato. sounds like a sine wave.

Anyone able to shed some light on these?

Well only speaking for Xpand!2, it is intended to be a ROMpler rather than a sample library, so what you get is what you get in a 1.5GB file.  It covers like 2400 instrument sounds, but you do not get multiple articulations of each one.

So I assume that the samples were recorded with vibrato.  Xpand! is perhaps not representing the highest quality sounds possible, but it should be fine for sketching. Maybe you would want to upgrade sounds for a final production.  I used to play brass, and I think some vibrato on wind instruments is natural and acceptable when you sustain longer notes.

I even looked into AIR's Structure sampler (which I think shares some sounds with Xpand!, but is a much larger library), and the vibrato seems baked into the basic brass and woodwind samples there as well.

Finally, I looked in my SampleTank 3 library, and the flute is the only instrument that I could find there with a "no vibrato" articulation.

Hope you find what you are looking for!

Thanks abacab, I'm sure I will eventually. I'm going back to the DSK page to check on installation. My ace in the hole is Garritan Jazz and big Band, which I'm sure will have very nice saxes, as well as some clarinets, trumpets and trombones to augment my orchestral libraries. But I need to wait for one of their big sales. I've seen it for 50.000. Should have grabbed it then.

Yes, you just drag the DSK dll into one of your VST folders.

The DSK Sax dil file should work, so long as your DAW is aimed at the path you put it in. It’s not bad. Just remember that it is 32 bit only so if you’re running a 64 bit DAW that doesn’t have an internal bridge, you’ll have to get jbridge or something similar to run it. If you’re doing non-symphonic music, I’d make sure you have listened to the soprano in the orchestral set before you purchase. They don’t always translate well to pop, rock, jazz etc.

I would agree that is technically correct, especially after years of playing in a concert band.  But I just recently had a conversation with a woodwind player that plays in both orchestra (flute) and pop-rock bands (sax) about the inclusion of the sax in the horn section of pop-rock bands.  They said that technically it is a woodwind, because of the reed, but the sax is typically made of brass, so ... there ya go ... the average person in the audience just sees and hears  a "horn" section.

What is happening is that CbB recognizes the plugi and I can open it, but when I do it tells me it can't find any samples. I'll try putting it in the 32 bit vst slot. I think I put it in the 64, being under the presumption that it was both.

Re: the correct nomenclature: I think of it as the hybrid it is. Same design, fingering as a clarinet, but made of brass. A woodwind that has some serious chops. Actually, I think of the soprano as a wood, the rest as brass, based on the sounds they make. to me, the soprano sounds like a blend between a clarinet and an oboe.

The problem, or so I am told, with trying to use these instruments in classical style music, is the way they are played, more than the actual sounds they are capable of. When not intentionally played as a jazz or rock inst,  they actually can fit in well with the orchestra. Then again, since I've never heard any of my music actually played, maybe this is all theoretical.

Try placing the entire folder "DSK Saxophones - win64" (containing DSK Saxophones.dll, DSK Music - Readme.txt AND DSK Saxophones.instruments) in your VST path.

No, that didn't help. I tried contacting DSK, but my request got bogged down in one of those Captcha traps. Honestly, they should call it Gotcha. One time, and I'm done with that BS. Oh well.

Download the 64 bit zip file, copy the DSK Saxophones.instruments folder and the DSK Saxophones.dll file to the root of a VST scan path, open DAW, scan, and should be good to go.

Was that a soprano sax I saw being used as the murder weapon last night on our Sunday Columbo marathon?

Re: Where Can I get some Decent Free Sax? 2018/12/17 20:30:55 (permalink)
Success! I finally got DSK saxes working. I re-downloaded and extracted them to a new folder I created, then copied to the VST folder as suggested. I must have gotten confused before and moved the unextracted folders directly from my downloads folder. Anyway, they sound pretty good! If the freebie is this good, the premium instruments must be really nice. These are definitely decent, free saxes. Thanks for all the help!
