[Solved-ish] ] Drag & Drop clips from TV into Browser without Track effects being applied?

Edit: Okay... I'm an idiot (probably). I'm not sure if the Drag Drop to the browser added effects to the resulting export or not BUT I realized that all the distortion I was hearing in GR5's tape deck was (possibly) not coming from the export itself. GR5 was running the file through the Rack Effects after the Tape Deck module. I had done another drag drop export, this time from the original track with no effects and disabled the Master Bus effects so it would have been a clean wave. It still sounded f*cky. Setting GR5 Tape Deck to "At Output" solved it (that plays back whatever is loaded in tape deck without any effects being applied).

Derp.

Original Post (just because now I just want to know if Drag Drop applies effects EVER)...

===============================================================================

So I've been trying to make more use of the Sonar browser for this type of thing but I just tried to drag and drop something wanting JUST the clip without effects. Instead it applied the effects.

So aside from actually disabling all the effects that might be getting applied is there a setting somewhere or a method to doing this?

What EXACTLY I'm doing is... I have an export in my project (of the whole project). It is already mixed and all effects applied. I want to drag just a section of it out so I can toss it into the GR5 tape deck thing (this is to slow it down as I work out some fancy lead parts). So I did a range select and pasted the selection into a guitar track that has a sim on it (I know I should just drag it straight from the original track but this revealed to me that when dragging into the browser effects are applied and I'm not sure if it will also apply bus effects too which I don't want). So the clip exported fine and this is very convenient for my needs BUT of course adding a guitar sim to a fully mixed track resulted in unlistenable garbage.

So... is there a trick to JUST getting the clip, as is without anything else at all added to it or I am going to have to disable stuff? Drag and drop export doesn't seem to open an export dialog so I can't disable stuff there.

It would just make things a little smoother for when I'm doing stuff like this.

Thanks.

You'll have to disable/ bypass the fx. Same as if you were exporting the clip and didnt want the fx applied. Sonar doesn't know that the fx you've put in a track or clip are not be applied.

Hiya, Mike. I saw that. Doesn't seem related (at least not from the first few posts) but maybe they have changed something that is useful to my situation.

I honestly think I just screwed up and it worked as I intended but I'm gonna test it later with a more scientific approach. By that I mean...

1) I will start with a clip that has a very distinct sound and leave it running out to a completely dry master bus

2) I will add some EXTREMELY obvious effect to the FX bin and/or PC of the track that will tell me for sure if it's being printed on drag drop to the browser

3) Drag drop to browser and and listen back to the resulting wave in something that cannot possibly apply any effects to it

4) Do the same thing over again except apply the effect to whatever bus the track is running through to see if that gets printed by drag dropping

Not that I don't trust you. If you say effects get printed with DD to Browser I believe ya. I just want to try out some various things so I know exactly what's doing what, when and why so I can go into such situations with a some extra skill/confidence. I think I will be doing this a lot so might as well get the annoyign learning experience out of the way before it needs to happen on cirical projects and when I'm trying to stay focused on more important things.

Cheers.

And really if they DO get printed using DD to Browser then I would still very much like to know if there is an option to disable that behavior without disabling effects.

I guess, in that case, I'd also want to know how to APPLY effects in that situation as well. If there were a DD to Browser export prompt then I could decide on a "per case" basis what gets printed and what doesn't but as it is I am not getting those. If there is a possible prompt then the next question would be how to enable/disable the prompt so I can pull a "set it and forget it" type scenario if I know I'm going to do a ton of DD export stuff.

This may however be heading into Feature Request territory. lol

More feature request me thinks as this is just the default behaviour. As far as I know there's no way to turn it off or modify it except on a per use basis on the fx side. Same as if I want to export a clip or track. if I don't want to process any fx I need to bypass them..

Actually you've got me thinking and I'm going to have to play around with this some more myself. Time for sleep and later I'll test.

I'm assuming you mean using the Bounce to Tracks option. I export dry tracks all the time VIA File > Export, select the Tracks option (with the tracks I want to export selected) and just disable the appropriate checkboxes (in this case FX but really you want to disable anything that applies like automaion or whatever).

That of course is the heavy handed, long way around, type of procedure I was trying to avoid in the first place. Just takes a frack of a lot longer than dragging something slightly to the right (into the Browser).

So yeah... FR probably. Seems like a no brainer really.

hmm... but doesn't Bounce to Tracks give you those export options anyway? I rarely use it. Bounce to Clips is a whole other animal (which is weird to me).

I guess... I just want some flexible options for Drag Drop to Browser (if they don't already exist).

I edited my earlier post to say you've got me thinking and I clearly need to do some more testing with this as I'm working off memory and not recent practice. I'd rather prove myself wrong than have you do it for me. Haha. Time to sleep.

Re: [Solved-ish] ] Drag & Drop clips from TV into Browser without Track effects being appl 2015/07/23 13:43:00 (permalink)
Yeah... lots of nuances to all these export functions and for me I spend most of my time playing into the software and for obvious reasons not nearly as much time exporting.

BUT I want to get into the whole "quick sampling" type stuff. Like slam out a quick riff or noise, drag it into the browser into a specific folder then reimport it into like a synth, sample bank, Track View or whatever so I can trigger it, manipulate it, toss it in here there and everywhere... that type of crap.

So you can see I just want to get REALLY familiar with this type of fast export and be able to have it happen exactly the way I need it to (effects, no effects, format, whatver).

I know Sonar has a lot of choices for this type of thing and the Browser does seem to be set up to facilitate this type of workflow. I just kind of need to know exactly what it's capable of and how to set it. I know enough now that I can workaround any limitations by doing stuff like printing effects to clips or keeping a clean track that outputs through a clean bus if I don't want effects applied or whatever various configs I need but if there is a way already to make these types of choices on the drag to browser then... well that would be awesome. If not... total FR material.

No need to test on my account though. I'll be playing with a lot of this stuff very soon but you sound like you want to check it out yourself anyway so definitely... let me know what you find.

Cheers!
