Some MIDI notes not sounding!!! (was: How to "compress" MIDI drums?)

By following the Sonar University video, I have successfully created a MIDI bass drum track from audiosnapping the live BD track.

However, the difference between loudest and softest on the MIDI track is HUGE compared to the original live track.

Is there an easy way to "compress" the MIDI (I'd prefer that to compressing the resulting Session Drummer output).

Midi notes can be individually adjusted for velocity, or you could use a velocity controller envelope.  Compression is an audio thing.

I started adjusting the level of the individual beats, I noticed they are NOT softer. The just don't play!

What is baffling is, if I play the entire track, some BD beats don't sound. At all.

But if I put the cursor just before the non-sounding beat and hit play, it sounds just fine!

    What is going on?

Further experimentation: random Bass Drum notes simply do not play!

If I start from a different position, other notes tend to randomly not play.

How utterly weird. This is not discussed in the Sonar University video!

I have even found a position, 2 seconds before song starts, where the FIRST beat does not sound!

    Weirder and weirder...

Usually when these midi skips are reported, the advice is to raise the default midi prepare buffer (in Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Playback and Recording) to 500 ms or a little bigger. Hope it helps you.

    Thanks bvideo, that was it.

Man, I cannot believe that the default setting is too low to handle a project with a single mono-track bass drum which only plays every 1 and 3 beat!

So many features in Sonar seem to need tweaking or an extraordinary degree of in-depth knowledge before they can  be used.
