Some Recent "Traditonal Country" Mixes

Here are some songs that I had posted on a different forum section in response to a request by a forum member.

Here are a couple of recent mixes. I did the Pedal Steel, Bass, Rhythm Guitar on first song, "Farewell Party" for a local singer.

Next one, I did Pedal Steel, Lead Guitar and Bass. This is one of ex Nashville Songwriter Jimmy Pepper's demo songs that was sent to Hank Williams Jr's publishing co.   Jimmy got a new publishing contract with Hank Williams Jr's publishing company from the songs on the CD project.

Finally, Here is one that I just tracked Pedal Steel for a studio in New Zealand. It is a Bob Dillon song "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" that was a school project.

#1 could use some melodyne on the vocals

#2 some of the music didn't agree with itself. one instrument playing one chord and another instrument is playing a different chord at the same time. needs fixing right at the start and close to the end there was something off a bit

#3 is a long time favorite of mine. its the best of the 3.
they sound good from the mixing POV. just some minor nits to pick to get them sounding really good.

Sorry, I don't hear it.  Peppers must not of heard it either as he thought the entire "demo" album sessions were great.  Considering his pedigree I'm not going to argue with him.  Peppers has major label producing experience in Nashville (produced Mel Street for one) including producing sessions at the old "Bradley's Barn", written songs recorded by many artists including Jack Greene's first top 10, a #1 for Dottie West (Forever Yours), was George Jones' band manager and has about 20 songs recorded by Jones over the years.  He was the drummer in Ferlin Husky's road band in the mid 60's.

Hank Williams Jr and his partner in his publishing company signed him to a new publishing contract based on the songs on the demo session CD.

Herb, I don't hear what you are apparently hearing, either place.

I went back and listed to the original Sonar track.

I don't hear what Herb is hearing either.

Nice tunes. I did think the steel was a little too loud most of the time.

The common threads all these songs are good playing and good mixing.  The songs are nicely written, and the lady's voice in the third song is pleasant.  However, I agree with Herb about the first song.  The vocal is so out of pitch that it's beyond the "Willie Nelson" effect and distracts from the whole.  I listened to the second song twice, but I didn't hear the issue Herb had with it.  Mainly, the vocal in the first song is the weak link.  That could easily be fixed if you have the desire to do so.  All in all, they show promise.

    All the best,
    Lynn

The issue is in song #2  at about 7 seconds in.... the last chord the steel holds before the singing starts.

OK... my bad.. the chord the steel is playing is fine.... it is the bass. It doesn't return to 1.... the root.   there are a few other places where the bass is off / missed note.... (0:16) .... and then at 1:56 that ain't right.... the chords are not fitting the music for about 2 seconds.

    its not a big deal.

The singer on the first song can't be fixed.  V Vocal and even Autotune won't help.  The steel is hot, but that is how he wanted it.

Jack... feel free to send me the singers track. I have melodyne and I know for a fact Editor can fix that. I have fixed vocal tracks that were worse than that one.

Just an open offer. It'll cost you nothing but the time to send the file. PM me if you are interested and I'll send my email address.

Fixing the vocal will raise the quality of the track 100%.

Herb, I would love to have them fixed.  No use just doing the one (he did a 10 song CD) and they are all similar.  The singer has the CD and is selling them at his shows and very happy with it.  I do some live shows with him and that is his "natural" voice (I won't say any more).  I can send it to you, but it would just be to see if it could be fixed.
