Some basic questions about MIDI controllers in the new PRV
I need to import MIDI files from Band-in-a-box and sometimes Finale "human playback". These programs have the characteristic of using 3-7 controllers per track (velocity, volume, portamento, etc). Before 2017.3, the SONAR UI made this practically impossible to use, so I didn't. Now that we have the new PRV, it seems like this should be very manageable. I am running some simple tests to learn about the new capability, but things don't seem to be acting as I expected. 1) I brought in the MIDI for a bass line. It all plays fine, and I can edit the velocity controller no problem. I added a controller to the MIDI track for "10: Pan (Channel 1)" I expected this would allow me to edit midi information that would govern the pan knob on the bass MIDI track. I used right-drag to select a bunch of bass notes, then in the controller 10 pane, I drew a sweep from 0 to 127 and back to zero. When I played the track, the Pan knob did not move. Am I missing something basic here. 2) I added a portamento controller as above but got no portamento effect. Perhaps the synth (SI Bass Guitar) doesn't support portamento, so maybe that makes sense. 3) I added a sustain pedal controller. That worked exactly as expected. I could paint 127 and 0 to cause the sustain to take effect and release. Perfect. 3a) Now this gets peculiar. I deleted that sustain controller, yet the sustain information remained. I would have expected that information to go away when I deleted the controller. I added the sustain pedal again, thinking the info might re-appear. But it actually re-appeared on the Pan controller. I had to select a different MIDI track (guitar) and then select bass to get the information to show up under the correct controller. That seems like a bug. Any thoughts on this, especially the part about pan controller not having any effect?

I don't have any idea .. but keep experimenting, please. This is the first version of Sonar in several years that has the potential to have value for us midi users.

Hi cparmerlee:) In Track view, when opened the controller lanes, the "-" knob doesn't delete the controller! You have to Right-Click on the controller Line and delete it! The "-" just closes this Lane and keeps the data. Bassman.

I'm not finding that. If I right-click on the controller name at the lower left of the PRV, I only see "Copy selected values ..." and "Move selected values ..." If I right click on the data portion of the controller pane, I don't get any popup menu at all. It seems to me that the "-" sign should have a tooltip that says what it does. And further, it ought to offer the option to either delete the data or simply hide the controller while preserving data.

Hello - To delete a controller, you must remove all the data. You can lasso the controller changes, then delete. Or you can delete the data in the Event List.

Pretty sure it is no different than earlier versions of SONAR. Another way to delete controller data is convert it to automation and delete the automation.

OK. Thanks. Any idea why PAN commands wouldn't work? I can see in the event list that I have inserted pan commands on the MIDI track, but they are not affecting the pan knob for the MIDI track.

I don't use pan that way, I would create an pan envelope on the Synth or Inst. track.

Yes, I understand that would be one way to do it. But I am trying to understand the new PRV, and it seems to me that the MIDI pan commands should be showing up on the pan knob for the MIDI track.

The pan events have never been linked to the pan slider in the track view. If moving the pan slider is important convert the pan events to automation. Automation does move the pan slider.

OK. Thanks. It isn't particularly important. I was just trying to learn how the new PRV works. I guess the answer is that most of what you see there has no effect at all, but the new PRV is a much cleaner way to manage the basic controllers like velocity, modulation, and sustain pedal.
