Some things just don't change...

Some might remember how my sweat ruined my Epiphones in no time, and how the contact of my skin did a number on my SGJ...

Well...

You may also remember that 4 months ago, I finally got my Gibson Les Paul (Studio).

Shortly after however, I was recruited for the big Judas Priest Classic Album Night and had to switch back to the SG. Right after which I was recruited for another project which required me to switch bass, so I didn't really have much time to play the Les Paul at all.

A couple of weeks ago, I finally had the opportunity to get back to it, and that's when I noticed that, as little as I seem to have played it, I have managed to damage the finish... It's actually hard to capture with the iPhone camera, but every area which is in constant contact with my skin seems to have been discoloured, such as on the edge where my picking hand forearm rests when I'm playing...

The odd thing is that I have a white Epiphone Les Paul Jr which I've played a lot more than that and the finish is intact.

Kinda weird, uh?

Will an auto paste wax like Maguire's clean some of that up?  Having a little bit of a coat of the wax on and wiping it down afterwards may help to preserve the finish....If you care about that.  Some really dig the "worn" look.  I dig it on Strats, but not as much on Gibson's.  Go figure.

Or.....it is just truly Acid Rain.

I tend to agree with you, though those old 50's Les Paul's are gorgeous.

The irony is that even though it was my main axe for over a decade, my strat showed very, very little sign of natural use. It does bear the scars of me throwing it around and doing stupid stage tricks with it, but nothing seemed to ever affect that finish beside absolutely excessive behaviours on my part.

As Bat say, this is probably a case of nitro vs poly.

As for the rest, I don't mind. I don't really want it to age that way, but if that' what happen, that's what happen.

You've got the answer. Thin nitro vs thick poly. I tried some industrial paint stripper on a Fender bass once. It sat on the finish for 3 hrs. and didn't touch it. The same stuff takes lacquer off in 20 minutes.

Ya, Poly is indistructable. You can chip it, but it doesn't wear. Don't try to relic a Poly finish. 😄

Well you may have heard the same about Rory Gallagher:
I quote:
"His Fender Stratocaster was in good shape when he got it in 1963. The guitar had most of its varnish peeled off, reportedly from the high alkaline content of Gallagher’s sweat. "

Hi,

The worst I ever saw was Mike Howlett's modified small scale bass guitar ... a modified one that had both types of pick ups like the Special version of the Fender has ... and the top, that little wood bridge that guides the strings, was loose and falling off every hour on the hour!

When they got it glued and he warmed up on sound check, he goes ... is it too bass'y? I said not in rock'n'roll! It must be right, then, he said! It was! I have that show on tape from the master board man himself, who went on to play the bass in University of Errors. Both him and Pierre Moerlin were on steroids on both of those nights in Portland and Eugene!

And the darn little piece was loose again at the end of the show. The image is just below the Daevid Allen pics on

http://pedrosena.com/photos.htm.

Thx

As shown before, here is Walter Trout's Artic White Strat.  Heck, if I saw this laying by the trash pile even I might just leave it there!

Hi Rain ,

Yeah man , I like the way your guitars look . to me it looks like all natural wear.

Say, with all the animals and critters you have at home , I'm surprised your guitars don't have teeth and claw marks on them ….
btw I saw a picture of your new puppy ..really cute ..that's the one your gonna have to keep a close eye on

the guitar in the middle I bought new in 87 ( modified by me American Standard )…it used to be white …
it has been the way it is electronically  for almost 25 years

the other 2 guitars are sort of just hogging space in the picture…

have a good one ,
Kenny

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .

I play a "Gibson " R 8 Les Paul Cherry Sunburst .

The studio is the only cat/animal-free room in the house. Though I do make exceptions for my baby girl Mongoline aka Googlie every now and then. But then, as you see...

Then come and get my cat Minion (the demonic type, not the yellow cute one) because he is a pain in the ass with his interaction. He likes to jump up on my shoulder like a parrot. He likes play fetch for an hour at a stretch, and he will howl if I go to bed before he's ready to quit for the day. I call him my Cog because I think he was a dog in a past life.

Oh ya, he likes to jump on the keyboard if I spend to much time on the forums.

I like your cat , nice little video too….one of them meows around 0:23 worked pretty nice w the back round music .

With my dog Duke , I've had a few close calls . He likes to spin around when he gets happy .
One time I came home from running errands and he did a little spin and started wagging his tail ..I got to the guitar that was on the stand just before it fell ….
I need to set up my studio , I haven't done it yet ..still living out of boxes ….they are doing construction where I live  and all the storage I used on my patio deck is sitting in my bedroom ….it may be another month …
Good Luck on the gig your wife  ..
