Someone in New York...

is playing bagpipe.

I'm on the 9th floor on one of the busiest streets in NYC, all windows are closed, yet I can hear it. Half an hour of my life spent listening to quasi B-flat and what sounded like a giraffe being molested.

I thought drummers were annoying and loud...

No.  He's done tracking bagpipes in California that they could hear in New York.

A friend of mine plays snare in the Atlanta Pipe Band. He's my housemate's son and I've known him for 30 years.
I actually like the stuff they play.

Bagpipes - The cure for Rap.

Well, how many rappers have you heard gettin' jiggy over some bagpipes?

(I sincerely hope I did not just invent a new "artform"...)

Luck of the Irish brings bagpiper and Jamaican rap artist together for 'The Sound of the Bagpipe'

    BY PATRICE O'SHAUGHNESSY
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
    Wednesday, March 09, 2011

An Irish bagpiper and a Jamaican hip-hop artist seem an unlikely duo, but they've collaborated on a music video of reels and reggae filmed on the Emerald Isle.
Bronxites Brian McGuire, a banker by day and a piper with NY Metro Pipe Band and Rally Bop, who mixes rap and hard-charging reggae, made "The Sound of the Bagpipe" after a Harlem-born music producer brought them together.
McGuire, 31, was having a drink in the Hudson Hotel bar last fall when he met Will Roberson, an independent producer whose clients range from French hip-hop group KDD to New Age artist Jean Michel Jarre and Jose Feliciano.

Reminds me of the time I was at the Key West Sunset Pier (at sunset) where different street performers all gather to get a few bucks of change from the tourists like me. Nice event. Guitar players, singers, jugglers, etc. One time a bagpipe player showed up in full dress kilts. While bagpipes are a novelty to me and I enjoy them for the novelty, the other performers that evening were a bit irritated. Bagpipes can be loud, and trying to sing over them was not very doable.

On the other hand, bagpipes during a funeral march is a very stunning tribute. Hard not to have a tear come to your eyes.

    Broken pencils are pointless.

We saw a lady playing koto in the subway here last year - it was incredible. Plus, I've always had a thing for traditional oriental music, and I had heard recordings countless times but to get to see someone play the instrument live was something else. Wish we get to hear her again this year, though we haven't managed to so far.

That and the two guys playing cymbalom near Plaza Isabella in Madrid are some of the good memories of the last year on the road.

Vuvuzelas are a torture instruments, plain and simple. :P
