Something 'Is" wrong here! - Copying Files
I know I've mentioned this before and I've been told it is "normal"... First off it is not normal for any version of cakewalk audio up until X1d... Second is that there is something wrong going on.... I have a song open and I save it I then use windows explorer to copy the song's folder system to my backup drive I get an error message saying that windows can't complete the copy because files are in use by another program I close the song file I copy the folders again I get the same message! The song is closed yet the audio files are still "in use by another program??? Until I close Sonar all together... Then it will copy... What is going on here? I've always been able to copy them while open before and yes, I know all about not being able to delete or move files while in use, but copy has never been a problem.... What a pain for me! Keni

You don't need to use Windows for this. Use save as and use a new location to copy you project over to.

I think this is a Win7 issue. I've run into this with many different applications. Makes me crazy. Sometimes even closing the app doesn't free up the file, and I have to wait until after I've rebooted. You might want to try searching the web outside this forum for answers; this hasn't yet made my top ten list of "Win7 behaviors/problems/limitations/pointless changes from XP that I need to research."
SONAR Platinum x64, 2x MOTU 2408/PCIe-424 (24-bit, 48kHz) Win10, I7-6700K @ 4.0GHz, 24GB DDR4, 2TB HDD, 32GB SSD Cache, GeForce GTX 750Ti, 2x 24" 16:10 IPS Monitors

not a win "issue" but it's the way windows manages file access - when an app "open"s a file the app should after reading that files contents then "close" or "release" that file, so that same file can then be "open"ed or "read" by other apps, if not "releas"ed then the file appears "lock"ed... @keni, try copying the file when sonar is not running, as it sounds like sonar is "locking" the file

Pwal Keni said it copies when X1 is closed.

John You don't need to use Windows for this. Use save as and use a new location to copy you project over to. Thanks John... I try to avoid that method (for this situation) as it's too much location changing and I forget where I've left it... ;-) But I will probably be doing that a bit more often for the moment... Keni

Sonar is even locking the file after the song is closed.... Sonar is still open but it should have (even by your described idea) allowed the movement once the songfile was closed and Sonar still open... No reason for that is there? There's no reason to stop a file from being copied when it's open tho there are reasons why moving and deleting are locked... And on this very machine with the same OS, it has never been this way until X1d, so I question it's validity. I see nothing that it protects as the file remains open and available to whomever is using it... Thanks for the thoughts tho... Keni

I've had some success with "Unlocker" in such cases. It's a free download and can "kill" the process locking a file or app allowing you to do with it as you please. http://unlocker.soft32.com/ Steve

I just close SONAR when I'm finished with it, then use a batch file (with a shortcut right on the desktop) to copy all of my audio folders to another (internal) hard disk. Then every so often, I synchronise the "backup" disk with an external disk. It's just as easy, and I'll send you the batch file if you're not in to that sort of thing (I'll even "customise" it for you if you give me your file locations. As a matter of fact - here it is: Call it something like sonarbackup.cmd @echo off Rem Clear the cakedata files before copying rd f:\backup\audiobackup\cakedata /s /q md f:\backup\audiobackup\cakedata xcopy d:\cakedata\*.* f:\backup\audiobackup\cakedata\ /s /e REM - this just shows that there's actually something on the backup drive and how big it is... f: cls cd \backup\audiobackup Dir f:\backup\audiobackup\cakedata\*.cw* /s /ON pause Dir f:\backup\audiobackup\cakedata\*.wav /s pause

It's been a while since I used such commands, but I think I understand your batch file... But this all "spoils" my work mode as I usually backup my file many times while I'm working on it... I don't leave files to be backud up "later"... So I need to backup my files individually.... Keni

If Sonar still has some of the project files open, you will be able to see that using the Microsoft sysinternals "process explorer" program. Another diagnostic would be to try opening a different project after closing the project you want to copy. Maybe Sonar will finally close the handles it has still opened (cached).
