Something even more tuneful...mass setting
As you won't be aware unless you're RC, there is a new translation of the Missal being introduced in the English speaking world. This is supposedly a more accurate rendering of the original Latin, Greek and Aramaic source...personally I think it's an excuse to make money by making all parishes buy new mass books etc. Anyway, the words to some of musical bits is also changing. So here's a new mass setting I wrote over the last few days; the Gloria and Lamb of God were adapted from an existing mass I wrote a couple of years ago. It's just me singing, but try and imagine with sopranos, and maybe organ/orchestra. Anyone who wants to use it (not that I suppose there are many people who would on here!) is welcome, I hope to have the score reduction done in the next month. So you have the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation 1,2, and 3, Doxology and Amen, and finally Lamb of God. It's all in one file for ease of loading. Just me and my piano! http://soundcloud.com/markhaigh/st-joseph-mass

Hey Mark, Beautiful. Really very beautiful work. I CAN imagine a full choir. It will sound amazing. Very impressive. Will you get it going in your parish?

hope to, i play organ sunday morning, most sundays we have a more traditional mass, (we currently use mass settings by Inwood, Farrell and Walker, who are fairly well known Catholic music composers), once a month we have the schoolkids doing it (i play guitar then!) and in September we're launching a youth mass, aimed more at teenagers. So certainly at that particular service i'd like to do some of this, alongside newer hymns by people like Matt Redman and Matt Maher. thanks for the listen, you too Mike!

Mark - Stunning work. I would love to hear this with a full cathedral choir although I also very much like your idea of using it as a youth mass. The harmonies are delicious and I am sure that teenagers would love this. I also think you have an excellent voice - alley cats throw boots at me when I sing! Best Regards Malcolm

Let me say that the singing sounded great! Some of the singing imperfection made it down to earth and organic. Love the mood of the piano,

Hi Mark, this has the potential of something absolutely stunning with an appropriate orchestration but it's also great in this form. Very good, Sir, very good. Greetings, Rik

Hi Mark , nice work on this musical piece ! Vocals work very nicely , not the kind of music I would listen to but on the other hand it has a place on the award list giving you a big ten for music and vocal . Nice one ! Radio

Wow - some very nice stuff! I like all the tonality changes in the 2nd piece - nice chord movement. The singing is performed well. (Reminds me a little of the way the male singers in the republic of Georgia sing) It sounds really great. I wonder what it would sound like drowned a little in a lush cathedral type reverb?

Hey, Mark, This is absolutely beautiful, what an fantastic job you did on this! It's very inspirational, traditional and relaxing. One of the reasons I first wanted to learn to play guitar was when our 7th Grade class attended our first "electric" folk mass. We walked the six blocks from our school to our parish church, and ended up getting there ten minutes early. The musician's were tuning up and fooling around a bit, and one of the guitar players, who had a powder blue Fender Mustang, started playing the opening riff of "Sunshine of Your Love", and I just knew I had to learn to play guitar. I don't know if it was Clapton or God, but, talk about "Divine Inspiration"! Anyway, amazing work on this, buddy, have a great weekend! Bob

Gino - cheers, tried to be a bit more subtle with the 'verb, but it is tempting to pretend i sang at St Pauls or something... James - thanks for listening and commenting! Bob - very kind words, one good thing about using these kind of structures is you can experiment a little, but given the final target market, as it were, you are restricted in how much, so it should stay somewhat tuneful and sacred. nice story about the the Cream song!

"As you won't be aware unless you're RC, there is a new translation of the Missal being introduced in the English speaking world."
Are you suggesting that we need a Missal guidance system? I was raised Roman Catholic, but I'm no longer practicing (I got good enough that I didn't have to keep practicing.) Also, there are just too many sinners in church for me personally? Which is why I try to avoid it. The words remind me of what I heard way back in the day at St. Lawrence though, and St. Bernadette. I might touch up the vocals just a bit in a few spots, I know it's your style, they wander a little too much in a couple of places, like 4:10 to 4:14. I really liked the bit from 4:30 to 6:00. And the short bit from 6:00 to 6:36. Interesting to hear this type of hymn music posted straight from the mass. I enjoyed it Mark.

I just commented on another thread about how I am always intrigued by what I perceive as "unlikely" combinations, so despite myself I just had to listen to this. Being non-religious, much of the significance is lost on me, but it was nice to hear your "real" voice and your composition and playing skills are quite something. Probably not something I'll spend a lot of time listening to in honesty, but I'm glad that I did. Respect to you !

Mark- This is truly remarkable and compelling work you've done here. I'm working at the moment and had every intention of listening to these pieces in the background whilst doing email, but I wound up dropping everything and just listening. I can only imagine what these would sound like with an organ, orchestration and a choir. Your vocals were just superb, and hint at the full potential. The quality of this work is such that it demands a listening audience, in church or elsewhere. I'm running out of time and adjectives, but this was somewhere beyond excellent.

Stunning piano work Mark!! Definitly a different side of you that I never knew. Like most have commeneted, as I was listening I was picturing a big cathedral with full choir, the whole works, while you were performing this. Best I've heard your vocals to date as well. You are a man of many talents my friend! Huge production sound to this and would you mind telling me what reverb you used on the vox? Wonderful!

thanks gary and larry! (sounds like we need a Mo for balance...) Larry i used the IK Classic Studio reverb, Hall model, two send busses, one for the main vocal and the other for the BV, i think the main vocal started with large church preset with a few tweaks, and the BV was something shorter... cheers!
