Sonar 3 VST synths have MIDI delay

I have several VST synths in Sonar 3. They all have a delay between key depress (both on the virtual synth screen and when routed to a physical keyboard) and hearing the patch from the synth. It seems to be about a half-second delay. What's going on, and how do I fix it?

What sound card are you using? What is your latency setting in S3?

    1. Make sure you card latency is 10ms or less
    2. Disable all plugins, delay compensation on one or more is killing you live performance. SIR is a prime suspect.

Thanks for pointing that out. I had my integrated SoundMax Digital Audio set to a latency of 220.5. I changed it down to 20 msec (any lower and the sound becomes crappy), but at least there isn't an annoying delay.

I should probably get a better sound card. This is the one that came with the computer. I've generally had negative experiences with integrated devices.

    Glad it helped.
Before you waste to much frustration on that card, there are some very nice sounding Recording Audio Interfaces starting around $100.

Thanks for the sound card info. I was in Best Buy recently, and though not shopping for sound cards, happened to notice a few ranging in price from 60 to 300. Not sure those are what I need, since they seem to be oriented towards consumer audio and gaming. Will have to poke around before deciding on the right card.

Before you do this, try downloading ASIO4ALL, which supports most commercial inbuilt sound chips. It is free, and will often give you < 20ms latency even on standard laptop etc inbuild sound chips.
