Sonar 4 On Dual Core

Hey all- really enjoying the forum! I did a review of the new Athlon Dual Core cpu's over at SOS which you can read here:
To Smithfield Or Manchester- The Dual Core Review For Musicians
I always thought that Sonar was a multi threaded app but i admit i didn't properly investigate it and i'm wondering if there is a way to enable it on both cores- could anyone from Cakewalk comment on this? I am using WinXP Pro which views it as 2 different cpu's- maybe if i was using win XP Home it would only see it as one large cpu

Sonar 6 PE
Project 5V2
Dimension Pro
NI Komplete 2
Reason 3
Tascam GigaStudio Ensemble(Sitting On The Shelf)
Intel Core 2 Duo 6300 @3GHZ
2GB PC5300 DDR2 Ram
EMU 1212M
Too Many Plug Ins To List!!

As long as Windows sees two CPUs, you can go to Options > Audio > Advanced, and check 'Use Multiprocessing Engine'.

And XP Home would not see one big CPU, it would only use one of the cores, because Home does not do SMP.

Thanks for the heads up boogie- unfortunately even with that option enabled the cpu meter maxes out in sonar yet task manager shows only 48-50% useage

    Correction:

XP Home does SMP just fin on dual core CPU's, just like it does with Hyperthreading. Licensing is done by physical processor, not core. So as XP will not support 2 CPU computers, it will support a single dual-core processor just fine.

XP pro supports up to 2 sockets for up to 4 cores.

I must say Dale did someone piss on your corn flakes this morning or do you always make totally pointless posts??

Yep it's 4.03(the second release) but i haven't experienced any drop outs while recording yet- if i do there will be hair flying

Is that a constant maxing out of 100% or just a spike?

Nope- its actually a constant maxing out to the point where the audio engine would stop completely, i'll post a pic shortly, im fixing a pc for a friend at the moment

I am using a Dual Core 4400+ on my system with Windows XP Pro and when I enable the multiprocessing engine...my load cuts in half. Not sure why you are seeing what you are seeing.

Do you use Producer Edition or Studio Edition- i know it probably makes no difference but i'd like to narrow it down. Also what is your current patch??

go to systemmanager (ctrl alt del) go to processesand search for sonarpdr.exe. Now rightclick (go to processor affinity): you now see wich core is attached to wich process, enable both if not.

If this doesn't help, search for a new bios for the motherboard.

I am using the Producer Edition, patch 4.03. I have heard of problems with 4.03, but as long as I am not seeing them on my system, I didn't want to revert. However, I don;t think any of them had to do with multiprocessing. That should work. Without Dual Procs or COres, you would not even have the option to enable the multiprocessing engine. So something is wierd there...I wish I could help. In task manager, you can separate the CPU graphs to monitor each CPU....see what is happening when you are running sonar and verify that obth CPU's are in use.

Hey, i just tried that and both processors are enabled for it- thanks for showing me that, i never knew about it. The picture linked below will show yee exactly what i mean:

Hey there. I see what you are talking about. I have seen Sonar report incorrect (or double) CPU usage on a couple of other occasions. I would be surious as to why that is. Do me a favor and try this fix that was suggested for a similar problem...and let me know if it works.

    (From another post):

I think it was Ron Kuper who kindly wrote here the "workaround" - to add a "UpdateNowOnTimer"=dword:00000001 in the registry .. since then i always use that (on any version - i wonder if some computers "like" this setting less than others..here it's fine)

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=39508&mpage=1&key=temperature鸟

on edit: found another older thread about that- http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=28826&mpage=1&key=temperature烮

EDIT: However, it does appear that one CPU is bearing the entire load. That is very strange. If you ask me....it doesn't appear that the multi processing engine is engaging. Is there any difference between enabling it and disbabling it. I would try both, shutting down the program each time you change.
