Sonar 7 help....
Hey guys, I have Sonar 7 and a TASCAM 1641 interface. I have recorded in the past with a mic, but the one I have now is busted. I am trying to record a little bit on my own going straight through the interface 1/4" guitar input. How do I select this input? My only options, that I know of, are under MME devices and they are left, right, and stereo inputs from the TASCAM. None of those work and I am running out of ideas. I know how to isolate the 8 mic inputs for larger recording efforts, but I only want to use the number 9 input. I do have signal going into the interface at this input. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

First off, you should be using ASIO mode and not MME. MME is the oldest and slowest mode. You should have 16 mono inputs (I believe) on that interface which can get paired up for stereo so you should have something like this: Left 1 Right 2 Stereo 1&2 Left 3 Right 4 Stereo 3&4 and so on. Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make sure you have all of the ins and outs selected there.
Dave Computer: Intel i7, ASROCK H170M, 16GB/5TB+, Windows 10 Pro 64-bit, Sonar Platinum, TASCAM US-16x08, Cakewalk UM-3G MIDI I/F Instruments: SL-880 Keyboard controller, Korg 05R/W, Korg N1R, KORG Wavestation EX Axes: Fender Stratocaster, Line6 Variax 300, Ovation Acoustic, Takamine Nylon Acoustic, Behringer GX212 amp, Shure SM-58 mic, Rode NT1 condenser mic. I switched to ASIO mode, but I only have options for mic 1 (left, right, stereo). I found an old mic that works, but I am still curious as to why I cannot use all 16 inputs. The TASCAM is listed as 1 in and 1 out. I also have a question on playback. I usually set the output to Master and I can hear my playback through my laptop speakers and headphones, but now that I switched to ASIO; I have nothing. I haven't recorded anything in about a year, so I am a little lost. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum. First, make sure you have the latest drivers for the 1641 and your operating system: http://tascam.com/product/us-1641/downloads/ Then connect you speakers and/or headphones to the TASCAM. You should use it for both in and out when using SONAR. Plus, ASIO will only allow you to use one audio device at a time and your computer's sound card doesn't have ASIO drivers, probably. Using 2 audio devices will cause problems since they each use different clocks and they cannot be synched. Check options>Audio>Drivers that all the available TASCAM channels are selected.

I appreciate the help. So, basically, if I wanted to record using more than 1 input; I will need to have an updated soundcard that has ASIO drivers? If I do upgrade, will I then automatically have the options available for more inputs? For example: I have 1 mic in, out, and stereo now. If I upgrade card/laptop/drivers, I will then have 1,2,3,4,etc.... automatically or will I have to change more settings? There is nothing in the TASCAM manual about this stuff and I really do thank you guys for your answers. Also, what sound cards would you guys suggest?

No. When using the TASCAM, which has ASIO drivers, you don't need the computer sound card. The TASCAM becomes your sound card.

Alright, I understand that. What I do not understand is how to use my 16 inputs on my TASCAM. If I can only use one at a time with my current set-up, what will I need to take advantage of having multiple inputs?

Did you check to see if you have the latest drivers for the TASCAM and yor operating system? Did you go to Options>Audio>Drivers in SONAR and make sure all of the inputs are selected? Once you have the inputs selected, you should be able to use them.
