Sonar 7 not finding the audio on Sonar 3 tracks...

Hi,

I recently got a new HP Pavilion Slimline desktop and decided to finally install a Sonar 7PE program that I had been sitting on.  I had a number of songs from my previous computer that were recorded on Sonar 3.  I backed them up and put them on the new computer; but when I try to open them, I get a pop-up scene that is offering to help find my "missing audio."  It lists each track of the song sequentially.  If I opt to "skip all" then it shows me the usual interface and the actual tracks are there, but there is no audio data.

Shouldn't Sonar 7 PE read these files without a problem?  Is there a plug-in I'm missing (my old computer had an M-audio Audiophile 2496 card and ESS Allegro as a driver.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

A sonar project file only contains links to the original audio. Hopefully you backed up the audio files. There should be an option to find audio files when they are missing. Just browse to them and save the project.

    Yes to what WDI said.
In the Options dialogue of that version 7 you can also check the paths this version uses.
Does a path lead to the audio files of those old projects?

I don't remember if any of the path settings can be per project, or if they are always global.

Sonar has 2 basic filetypes, Project (CWP) and Bundle (CWB). The CWP contains the MIDI tracks, Sonar-specific control information, and POINTERS to the audio files that it stores in the Global Audio folder. The CWB contains the MIDI tracks AND the audio tracks in a single file. You generally work with the CWP because it loads quicker, but when you backup, you either need to backup the CWB or use per project folders that contain the CWP and audio tracks.

For future reference: read the section in Help called "Backing up projects with digital audio".

Some good tips from other users here ... I can't add too much, but if I remember correctly Sonar 3 stored audio in a Global Audio folder, whereas Sonar 7 has the capability to use "per-project" audio.  So, I suspect it is just a path issue, depending on how your Sonar 7 is set up.  Hopefully you still have the audio from the Global Audio folder, which you can them move into a respective "per-project" audio folder, or whatever other path your Sonar 7 is set up for.  Good luck.
