Sonar 8, Roland FA-06 and Fantom G7
Okay chaps - another query I have Sonar 8 running with several audio tracks, and wish to assign the FA-06 to (lets say) my nice Vox Humana patch on the top stand which has my FA-06 in 'Studio' mode and my lower, with the Fantom in Live Play mode having the keyboard split, two patches each for the bass synths and fill synth half and half. Two MIDI tracks in Sonar 8, one assigned to the Fantom and one to the FA-06 track one to each. Here's the snag. Play bottom and top plays, and vice versa. Whatever key I press on the Fantom, the FA plays also. What is going wrong here? I know I am missing something fundamental. Cheers

Make sure they're on different channels? And welcome to the forum.

You don't give any details of how your connecting stuff. But I would look in the Sonar preferences first and see what devices are showing as in/out. Then you will need to select where you want the signal to go in the track inspector. Her's a midi tutorial that explains everything, go to part 2. http://www.cactusmusic.ca/Sonarmidi.htm

1. when the FA06 is in studio mode, it is occupying all 16 midi channels..so be careful what sound goes on what midi track in the fa06... 2. Unless you WISH the fantom g6 to be a midi controller for Sonar, or a controller for the FA06 then turn off its extmidi ..pad mode>ext midi> hit pad to turn off midi ch 1-16...then the G6 will only play its own sound module it sounds very much like .. a) you have midi routed from G6 on ch1 (default) into Sonar and out again to FA06.. common enough :)

Hi all, and thanks for the help so far. Just to expand: What I am trying to do is play x tracks of audio (drum track elements, bass, synths BVs) all mixed down in Sonar's internal mixer. So far, this is okay. I do have the midi tracks which these originated from muted, archived and hidden behind, just in case I need to fish a track out and re-record, or I'm not happy with a sound. For the live stuff (which my colleague, keysman will play) I want to maximise his arsenal. I also want Sonar to select a lead synth on the top deck FA-06 (for Numan's 'Cars', I have a great Vox Humana patch I have sweated to produce) and for him to have the lower deck Fantom G7 in Live Set mode, split across the 76 keys to give him layered bass synth 'here', mid placed synth 'here' and top end with something else, so he's not constantly faffing with changing patches. And for each keyboard not to bleed midi notes across the tracks into each other, as it is doing now. Both keyboard are connected via USB and I want them to change setups at the beginning of the next song in the Play Mode in Sonar. All I want is that when the spacebar is pressed, each board selects the next patches/Live setting and we play 80s synthpop. I'm sure I have something switched on, when it shouldn't be. In each keyboard I have switched off the local keyboard button on each board. I'm stuck now. Help

your current issue is simply a case of your midi routing. you clearly have the G6 midi output being routed directly or indirectly by default to the FA06 track input. Simply double check the midi input options for the fa06 tracks. There is nothing wrong with reprogramming each channel in the FA06 while in studio mode at the beginning of a track, or changing to a new (already programmed) studio set via Sonar. when using the G6, Live mode is the best for song changes, while restricted to 8 parts, there is no cutoff of fx trails or sustain in this case, allowing real easy and natural transitions, however the studio set works similar to the FA06 and a set change will make a hard cut to the sound so ensure that you fade out at end of each song.
