Sonar 8.5 Producer: Repair .cwp Projects

I've just recently recovered some .cwp projects that I thought I lost three years ago. However, when I attempt to open them in Sonar, I get the message: "Could not open file. The file may be damaged or incompatible with this version of Sonar. You may attempt to recover the file in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while opening it.".  I've tried that, but unfortunately it won't open that way either. The message about being incompatible with this version of Sonar is rather strange, as the files and projects were made in Sonar 8.5.3.282, and the version I have installed on my computer right now is that exact same version, Sonar 8.5.3.282. Is there a way for me to get it fixed? Also, the .wav files that come with this project, according to a friend of mine, Bill White, have missing headers. How do I fix those without being able to see? Is there a software that is screenreader compatible, which can allow blind and sighted customers alike to repair Cakewalk projects and fix broken audio files? Is there an email address where I can send these problematic projects and files for examination by the tech support specialists?

I Dream of Australia, France, and Canada, three wonderful nations that represent who I really am.

Were they made with the 32-bit version of Sonar, and you're trying to load it on the 64 bit version?

There is no more tech support. Gibson closed down Cakewalk and sold the Software code to Bandlab.

If you are okay sharing a cwp file, azslow3 would be the best person to ask to look at one of them. He is a forum member who has done a lot to create a converter to reaper so may be able to help you, since he has done a lot of work to understand the cwp format.

The community has been in sore need of a "cwp repair tool" forever.

No, they were made with the 64 Bit version, and that's the one I'm trying to load them back into.

They're not really corrupt. The audio is still intact from what my friend said, just there's missing headers. I've tried opening them in both Gold Wave and Audacity, but all I get is very loud static, when I know there's supposed to be audio data in there. What do I do next?

When I open the same .cwp file in "Safe Mode", Sonar acts like the project is empty, when in fact there should be tracks in there. Maybe one of you folks has a newer version of Sonar, and maybe you could try and see if the project opens in there. Is there a way to upload attachments? Maybe I could share it on the forum.

I know you have no reason to trust what I have written you in PM...

But if that is the same CWP you have uploaded the last time, it is not CWP. It has parts from audio files and parts from something else. I have scanned it in HEX form manually. Not only it has no SONAR mark at the beginning, it has no reference to any audio files nor track/clip names (they appear as text in normal CWP and so easy to notice).

i have long wished there were a .cwb fixing utility, one that would open all elements of the project except the corrupted ones.  that'd be pretty cool.

3.5 Ghz AMD 6-Core/16 gigs RAM, Roland Quad-Capture, Win 10, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Komplete 10, z3ta+, Z3TA+ 2, Rapture, Maschine 2.7 (MKI & Jam), Melodyne 4 Studio, Ozone 4, Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2, Schecter Damien Elite, Fender Sonoran w/TronicalTune Plus installed, etc

I would do that. However, none of the newer versions have accessibility for screenreaders like JAWS.

I bet if I ever master the C++ Programming language, I might be able to make one! Is C++ what Sonar is mostly made of?

Out of curiosity, what does the "Sonar Mark" look like? Is it a code of letters and numbers?

Hi Annabelle. What Alexey is referring to is the "file header." At the beginning of a data file is the description of contents, etc. so that a program knows what it is looking for and how to extract and use it. If you open a known good CWP file in NotePad or MS Word (Notepad may not open larger files), you will see a lot of gobbledygook, but some of it will be in plain English. Very early on (in the first few lines of the file) you should see the program name (e.g., "SONAR") followed shortly by the version number (e.g., "21.12.00.36") it was saved in. There is a lot more to the header itself, but I believe that is the "SONAR Mark" Alexey is referring to specifically. Since Alexey took the time to look at the file, you are not going to get a better result anywhere else unfortunately.

Without recoverable files to work with, it may be best to simply recreate the project from scratch. If any wav files will open and play, they can be imported; but if those headers are also damaged, they may be in the same boat as the cwp file itself.

And thank you Alexey for taking the time to look at the CWP file. The extra effort you put into things here is very much appreciated!

As Michael has mentioned, there are several important readable marks in correct CWP file.
"Cakewalk_SONAR" ("Cakewalk SONAR", without underscore, in early versions) is very close to the beginning.

I have checked the whole file. In case important sections are still in tact, I can restore manually. And I have not found any spells there is something from real CWP. CWP has the list of used audio files, started with "fref". Not there. CWP has the list of tracks with information about clips. Not there.

Offtopic. I recommend listen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgYoFaRH114&t=5s for another way to open CWP files. Gerard makes videos, but you will recognize he does that with NVDA. I am advancing slowly, so my accessible controller framework and Sibiac are not yet moved from Sonar to the Reaper world. But in case you can benefit from accessible OSC with RME TotalMix, soon for Behrigner Digital Mixers as well, please let me know or check the link in my signature.
