Sonar 8.5.1 Won't play

I am trying to play Midi files, but nothing is happening. Here is whats happening -
1. I open sonar
2. I open a new, blank project file.
3. I insert Soft Synth Cakewalk - tts 1 and route its outputs as asio4all Hp Speakers (my speakers I use for playback)
4. I insert a midi track and route it's output as cakewalk - tts 1

Now, my midi track shpult be routed through tts which is routed through asio, right? All cool, all set - you would think!

5. I press play and it doesn't play at all - it's not that it plays but no sound comes out or whatever, it just DOESN'T PLAY anything at all, the bar doesn't even move! Why would sonar not play at all? It should be playing the Midi track?

Is there any MIDI data in the MIDI track?

    Hi-

After Step 4- What are you using as the MIDI source -- a .mid file, presumably?

You can always load a demo like "Downtown.cwp" and route everything to the TTS-1, then to your Master Bus or audio outs to make sure everything's working.

You want to open it up via the synth rack and let Sonar do the routing as it should default to your soundcard. The TTS-1 has a Preview button for the sound in each column. Press it and see if you hear anything. Have the input echo button switched on.

The problem seems to be that when I press play, absolutely nothing happens - almost like it is frozen, but it's not.

Could you try and open it like I said. It's like a foolproof way of getting Sonar to set it up for you. You just load it and then preview the sound.

Uh, we've been trying, but you haven't given us a lot to go on! How about responding directly to strikingly's or my suggestions? Can you load and play a demo project? Can you audition a sound from TTS-1 once it's loaded? Is Input Echo on on your MIDI track?

    Help us help you!

Do tutorials 2, 4 and 8 and read the chapter on soft synths. This will get you started and playing soft synths with midi data.
There is no shortcut to learning it. Youll only help yourself by taking an hours and going over the recommended tutorials and reading of the chapters pertaining to soft synths.

We all did it and most did it more than 5 times to get it right

I opened into Sonar, and then opened the demo file "2 - part invention". There was no soft synth inserted so I inserted TTS-1. I routed TTS-1 to my main output, and I routed each Midi track to TTS-1. I made sure that there were patches on the Midi tracks, then clicked on play - absolutely no movement or reaction from Sonar. I also turned on input echo and no results.

You need to insert the synth with the synth rack or with the insert menu, using the insert soft synth function.
If you want to manually insert synths, youll need to know the routing first. so do it that way then look at the routing and see how it works, then if you want you can do it manually.

The thing is that with 8.0 I had no problems of this nature - I would route my output on the soft-synth and then I would route my output on the midi tracks as the soft synth and it would work - now I do the same thing, but when I press play, Sonar doesn't respond (I see a short spike on the monitoring bar, which indicates that something happened right?), but then it stops playing almost instantly. I am inserting and routing my tracks correctly, but Sonar isn't actually playing them - like the play function is dead or something?

First of all, its hard to help you if you don't tell us what soundcard you have.

Second, why are you using ASIO4ALL? Use the driver that is meant for your soundcard.

I was using ASIO4ALL on 8.0 - worked perfectly. Do you think it has something to do with the bitrate perhaps? I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2, 4 gigs of ram, Windows 7 Pro - its on an Hp Compaq 6730s.

+1 on this reply.  Online bulletin boards can be great resources, and sources of information.  When a user comes up with a problem, seeks help, but then figures out the solution on his own, he needs to post what that solution turned out to be.  Otherwise, a Forum like this becomes littered with long meandering threads with no solutions.  I think we should all feel obligated to help keep the information flowing.

Sauroctonos, you had people trying to help you out.  Now help future readers of this thread out, and post what resolved your problem.

    Re:Sonar 8.5.1 Won't play 2010/04/18 07:23:02 (permalink)
I still don't know what the exact problem was - it only occurred when I opened a blank template. No matter how efficiently I routed my tracks, etc, the play function would not work (also, as soon as I would open the blank template, a "warning" message about gs wavelab synth would appear, warning me that it was not enabled) - this made me curious, as I had never had this problem or "glitch" before. I turned gs wavelab synth off in the midi devices panel and opted for my usual Asio driver - but still, no reaction from Sonar when I pressed play.

I opened a demo track and suddenly everything was working perfectly. SO, either I am overlooking a large mistake that I was continuously making, or something has gone haywire with my templates. However, the simple solution was to open a demo file, erase all of the tracks contained within it, and to save that as a template for future use. Seems to be working beautifully. So I thank you all for that suggestion.

The actual "internal" workings of the problem are still unknown - I have no idea why the play function would bum out, because I compared all of the settings from the default blank template and the demo, they all seem to check out (the audio and midi settings, the routing of tracks, the inputs and outputs, are all the same, I even experimented with latency, bitrate, etc, but to no avail) - but the solution, for the meantime, seems simple enough. Just open a demo (I opened a pentatonic scale demo); once the demo loads up, delete all of the tracks within the demo (although I saved it with TTS-1 and DFH inserted as soft-synths so that I wouldn't have to open them every time I start a project, just for ease of use), and save it as a template for future use - I called this template "Midi Setup - DFH + TTS-1". So now when I start a new project I use that template - you can tweak the demo file as much as you want. But yes, the solution seems to be NOT using the default blank template.

The only scenario I can think of is that Sonar won't play because it doesn't 'see' anything to play - which makes me think you inadvertently put the MIDI file on an audio track, and Sonar couldn't see the MIDI data.
