There are at least three common ways to manually enter notes in a midi track. The PRV (Piano Roll View), the Staff View, and the Step Sequencer. Of the three I prefer the PRV so I would suggest going to YouTube and searching for "Sonar PRV". There are plenty of videos there that clearly explain how to use the PRV. And, of course, feel free to search for videos for the other two methods. Each one has its fans who swear it's the only one worth using and the other two are crap.

As it happens I am travelling and was playing around last night on my laptop with no MIDI keyboard attached. Normally I either record from a MIDI keyboard either in real time or using step input, but I wanted to try out a few ideas.

What the OP wants to do is very simple in PRV, just select a note length and insert it where you want it with the mouse. You can then tweak the velocity levels of each note for accents etc.

Staff view IMHO is more limited as an entry method, but it has some advantages for non-keyboard players who read music and would be fine for the OP stated, limited purposes. Its limitations as an entry method have been discussed ad nausem so I won't go further.

Step sequence is good for short repeating loops and drum pattens.
