Sonar 8.5.3 X64 Crashes

I cannot get Sonar to stay up Under Win 7 x64 using the RP500 USB audio driver. I had this exact config the same HP laptop & RP500 (different hard drive only) working under Vista 64. Apparently I set the latency too low but no cannot ever access the UI to reset it after choosing ASIO/RP500. Once I apply that setting in AUDIO, Sonar crashes and I'm lucky if I can cancel the stuck SONARPDR.EXE process with sysinternals process explorer.  I tried renaming aud and cakewalk ini files hoping that it would make me set up the driver settings again but no dice. I can't believe a setup that was rock-solid under Vista x64 is completely unstable under Win 7 x64.  I realize the RP isn't the best audio device and no doubt the driver is causing this problem but it's what I have to use for now.  

How can I reset ASIO parms for the RP device before bringing up SONAR?

I would try making the changes in WDM/KS mode after running the wave profiler, then go back to ASIO. And make sure you have the latest (2.1) driver installed for the RP500.

Did you start the computer with the RP500 plugged in? If so, Windows may have made it the default recording/playback device. That happens when I start up with my RP350 connected. That may lead to conflicts with the RP500 driver. Try starting Windows with the RP500 not connected, then connect it after Windows boots and has already assigned a default audio recording/playback device.

Interesting... I can load a project and play through the RP but as soon as I click on OPTIONS, AUDIO, SONAR crashes.

No, I uninstalled ASIO4ALL but SONAR still crashes. It doesn't seem to be able to deal well with the RP in ASIO mode. Unfortunately, the RP driver only supports 24 bit word size in ASIO and MME (32 bit). 

Yeah, it does seem to be a driver issue. Reaper can at least bring up the digi driver's ASIO control panel but I had at least one instance of a Reaper crash too. I need to do more testing this evening, including installing S8.5p & Reaper 32-bit under Win7.

My Win7 install has no updates. Perhaps I'll ghost it and then apply whatever's current...

Maybe I should have gone for that "stupid" TASCAM i/f deal. This is frustrating because the RP was so solid under Vista 64. I didn't buy the it for use as an i/f but it was nice to have after my old Delta 1010 host became unreliable. I don't record that much these days and it burns me to have to consider buying yet another i/f...

I figured I'd ask Digi support about this issue. To their credit, they responded quickly (still waiting on Cakewalk to get back to me - even tho' they probably can't help). Unfortunately, this was the response:

EDIT: OK, I though he was joking or putting me off but ASIO4ALL in front of the digi driver really works! I guess I didn't give it enough of a chance the 1st time 'round but I have 5ms latency and everything's working. So I guess I'll go with it. 

yeah, I just don't have much experience with Digi.  not a lot of people on these forums use them.
