Sonar 8.5.3 crashes when you slide the latency fader all the way to safe

Using XPSP3 and IDT Audio on Dell Precsion M6400....

Running some experiments regarding latency on my machine.... slid the latency fader all the way to the safe side and hit apply.... SONAR crash.  Will not open your file (same project) when you start back up.  You have to open sonar, adjust the audio settings latency setting back toward the middle, then reopen the project.

I have now upgraded to X1a.  I can't even open this file in X1a.  Reported the crash problem over there.

Cakewalk people.... I am a loyal user but gotta tell you, your products are looking way ugly at the moment.  Seriously.

Jim

You can't just slide the latency slider all the way to the left unless your sound card can handle it. Try something around 5 or 6 msec. That's about the best most can do.

New to this.. Where is latency slider.  Is it in Sonar 8.5?  I have latency settings under audio options ASIO.  Is that the same thing.  I can run at around 7 ms.

    Hi Jim,

Using onboard soundcards isn't very highly recommended. They don't have great drivers, generally, and are the cause of a lot of issues for people trying to use Sonar. I agree that it seems counter intuitive that winding the slider to the safe extreme of the setting would cause a crash but I think this says more about the quality of the drivers supplied with onboard cards than it does of Sonar.

I believe the preferred analogy is that you've bought a Ferrari (Sonar) and you're trying to run it on recycled chip fat.

If your card works in the middle of the latency range using WDM then leave it there. (It's a bit like that old Tommy Cooper joke 'I went to the doctor and said 'Dr, it hurts when I do this' the Doctor said to me 'well don't then'')

I'm always loathe to tell people that the solution to their issue is to buy something (there's normally a way around it) but in this instance, just buy yourself a better card. You don't need to spend a lot of money for a Maudio2496, 2 channel Echo or Edirol card if you're feeling flush push for an RME (incredible drivers) and you won't have any of these worries.

To echo what Rothchild said, onboard soundcards are okay for general use, but are just not suited for recording -- at least not at decent quality.

One popular and easy workaround is to try the asio4all driver, which might give you a "workable" latency.

And I have just spent 3 days proving this fact. you are extremely LUCKY to make an on board sound card work at all with most DAW software. Not only Sonar but I just messed around with Reaper and Cubase LE4. I have an Asus net book which has 2 Gigs of RAM. It works flawlessly if I hook up my Tascam us1641, limited VST use but records 10 track audio no problem.
On board realtech! no way Jose. And I kinda know what I'm doing.
Forget it, buy a real interface. They start at $100 but get something better.
$400 ( $40 Reaper)  software does not run on $10 sound chip.
