Sonar Freeze Problem...Had it since X1...

Been having this random freeze problem in Sonar X series, it's been going on since X1, happened quite frequently in X2 and I still get it occasionally in X3c Producer. I'll just be working on a project when the screen turns an opaque white and the header reads (Not Responding).
I can easily close out and force quit from the program, but I CANNOT re-open Sonar Xn unless I restart the computer.

It looks like this:

I've also turned off my Antivirus (Eset NOD32) and network connection, still happens. The problem also happens whenever the song project file is playing back. The playback continues, but after the screen turns opaque white, I can't stop/pause the song.

I can live with this problem, but it's incredibly annoying, and if it's an important project I have to remind myself to backup every couple minutes. Am I the only one with this problem? I've searched the forum and found nothing like it.

Hello

Jumping straight into this - Is it 64 bit sonar?
So you are running 1.0.8? http://download.esi-audio.com/?w=esi&p=34&g=1&l=en
Please update your drivers here (regardless of whether you think you are up to date or not): http://forum.cakewalk.com/Driver-Boost-m2928792.aspx
Please run windows update several times, also installing the optional performance fixes.
Please turn of 64 bit precision engine and run chkdsk on your hard drives. Defragging your hard drive is recommended.

Any further issues please check your event viewer and report back to us.

My hunch is this is driver related as some process is locking Sonar (if you cannot restart it). Please note to prevent reboots you could go into task manager and kill off the Sonar process.

Hope this helps...

Yes, this is 64-bit.

Yes, the 1.08 drivers have been around since 2009 and I have been using them. And yes, I have the 64-bit version loaded. In fact, on a whim I deleted them and re-installed the audio drivers, still happened.

This also happens even if I have no audio tracks running, just plugins.

My drives are fairly non-fragmented and do not exhibit the behavior characteristic of disk fragmentation.

As for 64 bit precision engine, is that recommended to turn that off, or are you asking me to use that to troubleshoot?
I have a pretty fast system otherwise.

I have tried to kill the Sonar processes before, and they do not delete.

Yes it is recommend to turn it off 64 bit precision engine until X3D arrives (please check forums for further details).

to recap...

If the issue still persists after going through all this, there are other things to try.

Cheers...

Re: Sonar Freeze Problem...Had it since X1... 2013/12/07 21:55:59 (permalink)
If you have 32-bit plugins present, this will invoke execution of BitBridge, and this may take some time to flush from memory.  You could see if this is also running using Task Manager, and you might be able to nuke BitBridge and free up Sonar, from what I understand from prior threads out on the forum.

Some 32-bit plugins do NOT play well with 64-bit Sonar.  Sometimes which ones can and can not be used in 64-bit Sonar will change after updating Sonar to a later maintenance update or version release.

So, do you have problems with projects if there are NO 32-bit plugins loaded into them?

I had to go through my 32-bit plugins one at a time to see which ones worked or not, and I created a sub-folder of the ones that seem to work, and those are the ONLY 32-bit plugins that are in the search path for 64-bit Sonar.

Just a thought, and I think worth some testing.
