Sonar LE and electronic drums

Is it possible to map individual electronic drums to a given virgin MIDI track in Sonar LE by drum name or number without buying new software? That is, can i define the toms, the snare, cymbals etc in a PRV (or even staff view)for future reference? Or can i assign them to the drum map view? Trying to make up my mind between a mid-level YAmaha (DTX500K) and Roland TD-11K. First requires MIDI interface, which i'm used to from the keyboard, the second is direct USB. Any preferences or advice?

    The drum map will define what appears in the PRV. Not sure about staff view.
    You can create maps, or modify existing ones. There may already be a map for your potential drum set in the presets. Check the list.
    As for USB vs MIDI, I have not noticed a difference.
    My controller (edirol PCR-M50) can go either way, and I have tried both.
    My e-drums(Alesis DM6) are USB only.
    No issues either way.
    How you monitor the audio output can make a difference, as far as latency, but that has nothing to do with your MIDI path.
    Get the kit that feels the best to you.
    MIDI is a fairly low level protocol (8bit) that can easily be handled by any contemporary system, no matter how you bring it in.
