Sonar Platinum Ipswich Performance Problems
I've been doing all the Platinum updates through Command Center and everything had been working fine until when I updated to Ipswich today few problems started happening: 1. Sonar itself started taking longer time to open. (at least 20 seconds or more) 2. Any project that was created on Hopkinton version started taking much longer time to open (close to 1 minute) 3. When the project opens, starting playback and stopping caused a 4-5 second delay making Sonar unresponsive. 4. If there was a video on the project, video would keep playing another 4-5 seconds even if I stopped the playback (during the unresponsive 5 seconds) I talked to technical support and the agent today. He made me delete the AUD.INI file and start the program again. That didn't solve the issue. I tried bypassing all the FX and synth plugins but that didn't solve the issue either. Even when I created a new session in Ipswich, the problem continued. Finally tech support agent made me roll back to Hopkinton (because I'm under a deadline on my project) via the command center and everything works normal as before. So looks like there might be a problem with Ipswich? I haven't tried unsintalling and installing Sonar completely yet, but since I'm in the middle of a project I wouldn't want to do that now. I'm using Sonar Platinum on Windows 10 with RME Fireface UC soundcard on an Intel i7-3820 with 32 GB Ram. No problems with Hopkinton and previous versions at all. Just Ipswich. On an additional note, for me Media Foundation Video engine is still problematic and glitchy compared to DirectShow. Flickers the video everytime I start and stop playback, doesn't stretch correctly to the aspect ratio, when I hit rewind (W) the video takes 2-3 times to completely rewind. (Using AVI video, other formats even have more problems). So I still have to use Directshow. I would think that would have been fixed by now. Thanks.

Mine used to do that for no apparent reason for a few years now. Somehow, the routing for the controller would get screwed up. To fix this, I would unplug the Faderport usb plug, open Sonar, remove Faderport from the controllers list, close Sonar, open Sonar, add the Faderport as a controller, close Sonar and write protect the two files that reference it, ctrlsurface.dat and one other. If you're interested, I can look up what the other file is and update this post...

I'm using Windows 10 Pro. The only thing I see is a "blank" screen for a couple of seconds when starting Sonar. Then the VST Scan window comes on and the Start Menu comes up. If I select a project from the start menu it is immediate. Same if I open another project from "File" and either Open or select from the list of previously used projects. When I start playback it is immediate, no hesitation. My projects are only "analog" tracks and mostly 8 or 9 tracks. No MIDI. My PC specs are in my signature.

It's been discussed before. IMHO Sonar is not using a separate process (like auto VST scan has) to update the news feed. Hence it holds it up. Same thing maybe when it reads in the project files and picture previews. It may also not support lazy loading. I'm not sure how the thumbnail pictures and other stuff gets cached either. It's likely the first time you run it... It will take longer than the second time.. Also note it takes extra time to save a thumbnail preview, not sure how efficient the code will be. Bakers could confirm if I'm correct or not. Until we get improvements here you could try putting in a firewall rule to block internet from the Sonar app. Or just disable the start screen. For a quick test disable your network interface card to see how quickly Sonar starts without internet.

Incorrect. All the start menu stuff is on a separate process and does not block the load of SONAR.

Ok. Read the ezine. Was there any performance fixes with Ipswich? So what is the issue? Have I got anywhere near it? Maybe OP can still can do the no internet test. Certainly people saw it speed up with the Hop update and no internet hence my conclusions (right or wrong). Cheers.

I dunno, every time there's an update there are a handful of people who say the performance opening projects is not as good as whatever they were using before so they roll back. I can't help but wonder if it's Windows-related. After a Windows update, upon turning on the computer it seems ANY program takes forever to open initially. I has taken Studio One five minutes to open a CD assembly project, which you'd think wouldn't involve a lot of heavy lifting, either 1) after opening within a minute of turning on the computer, or 2) after a Windows update. Otherwise the same project takes under a minute. It takes about as long to open Vegas, SONAR, or even Open Office (!) under similar conditions. Also note that SONAR often rebuilds the plug-in menu after an update.

^^ The "how long after boot" is a good point that rarely gets asked. Windows has a lot of "delayed start" processes that need to come online/stabilize before a user can have full use of an "idle" machine.
ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

I do agree with the delay possibilities of the program start after updates etc. But somehow that still shouldn't be related (I think) to the actual playback/stop unresponsiveness and video keeping playing after hitting stop. Also projects taking longer to open. Has something substantially changed in Ipswich vs. previous versions in terms of processes during opening projects and playback?

Windows update wouldn't take account of the fact that people have been reporting that blocking the internet speeds it up. Not sure if ipswitch has changed the behaviour. Assuming caching is being used first time you update Sonar and run it's bound to be slow, whether cache is cleared on every update no idea(or whether cache is involved at all or not right now). Nobody has specifically pointed to it as a Win10 issue.

Worked fine last night - saw the update this morning and now - nothing but dropouts. Pulled the internet cable and Sonar loaded MUCH faster but didn't change the dropouts. Increased buffering - no change. Loaded and reloaded Win10 and Sonar several times - no change. The only difference between working fine and not is Ipswich. using Win 10 (64 bit) intel i5-4460 @ 3.2 gHz, 12Gb ddr3, WD Black 1 TB. 44.1 kHz, 24 bit 2 x RME Multiface with ASIO @ 1024, SONAR Platinum 64 bit. Music file I am working on is 594 Mb total.

EDIT: I found the main reason why everything is slower in Ipswich for me (which never happened in previous versions including Hopkinton). I have about 340 tracks in my template. They don't have any audio or MIDI data in them. It's just Vienna Ensemble Pro orchestral template that I use for projects. Half of them (170) tracks are MIDI tracks ready for recording something. and the other half (170) are the Instrument (Audio) tracks that are associated with the specific output of each MIDI track. (which all of this is a very common template for Orchestral etc. usage). Every version since Ipswich had absolutely no slow down at all with this template. But now with Ipswich I tried deleting the tracks in chunks and more I deleted these empty template tracks, it started doing the lag less and less and when there is only 3 to 5 tracks left, the audio tracks itselves (3 audio tracks only with data) play perfectly. Again, this never happened in previous versions. Looks like there is some handling problem with Ipswich.. So rolling back to Hopkinton again until there is a fix.

Maestro6... update your sig to reflect your system specs. 170 instrument orchestral tracks with your cpu and memory is kinda extreme; it will take a long time to load, no matter the DAW. CPU hit is also huge...and I can't imagine not getting memory warnings, resulting in dropouts and system instability. I do when I get too crazy with templates and I got 6 lovely cores...unfortunately, core balancing is challenging and not related to Sonar. It's why lots of ViC folks use multiple synced machines... It doesn't matter that there's nothing on the tracks...they are loaded and active... especially when you press play or record. I can slam my much more robust cpu with just two instances of Omnisphere2 using Airwaves multies... Doesn't matter the DAW... then again, you say it was ok befor... really? FWIW, I notice no discernible difference in load times, even with several ips tracks and the new "DanaMania" png track icons on my vocal tracks. I did load up a bunch of kontakt templates with Project Sam, Spitfire, and other configurations and as befor, got the mem warnings and my system became unstable... 100+ heavy duty memory hogs do it every time... Often I delete lots of a template as I go along...as I'm not using everything. I wish we had a "delete all tracks not being used" button! Would make it easier loading templates, muckin' round, cleaning them up and loading another.

Maybe that's the reason he wrote that he's working with Vienna Ensemble Pro. It's assumed that maybe many instruments are hosted on other machines and connected through VE-Pro. So this scenario don't need huge cpu and memory on the daw host. -Markus

Now, this is interesting. Large / extreme projects are good for spotting performance issues when small changes accumulate ... there have been major changes to how MIDI vs. audio tracks are handled now that you can record synths. I wouldn't be surprised if optimization in the code is possible in a few places ... You should share that template with Cakewalk support.

I recently subscribed to Sonar Platinum, on the Hopkinton release. After installing everything, Sonar worked fine. I was noticing high activity on core 1 of my cpu, but everything seemed to work. A couple days later, the Ipswitch update was released. I installed it right away. Since the update, I haven't been able to open the project that I was working on before the update. Basically, after I click to open the file, the spinning windows icon never goes away. Eventually, i have to do an end task on Sonar. I Tried to open the file several times last night, eventually gave up. Going to try again tonight. Any suggestions?

Interesting - I opened a project I finished mixing about half a year ago (Braintree?) in Ipswich and I got this unusual high activity on core 1 and lots of drop-outs but haven't had time to follow up yet ... To be honest I have no clue as what could be causing this high CPU use on core 1 (plus the total imbalance with other core which are far less used) ... of course I have also updated win7 and NI plugs since finishing that mix... Anyone else that???

I have had a performance issue, but it may have been caused by enabling Hyper-V. That's the only other thing that changed. After about 1 minute into recording a take, it slowed down momentarily but did not drop out. I've now disabled Hyper-V and will see if Sonar is better.

So, to report back on my findings last night, I started up Sonar in safe mode. First attempt, I bypassed all plugins, and the project loaded no problem. Next, I loaded each plugin one at a time until I found the plugin causing the problem. I found that If I didn't load the Nebula 3 plugin on my drum track, the project would load with all the other plugins. I was using the same plugins prior to Ipswich, and they were all loading fine. Not sure what changed. Update!!!!! I found the cause of my problem above. A couple days ago I was trying out WASAPI mode, to compare with ASIO. After I finished, I forgot and left my driver set to WASAPI mode. This is what caused the sudden problem with Nebula3. After switching my driver back to ASIO mode, I was able to load my previous project files with out disabling Nebula 3 first. FYI. I still get the high CPU activity on CPU 1. Not sure what's going on there.

Maestro6 Now, this is interesting. Large / extreme projects are good for spotting performance issues when small changes accumulate ... there have been major changes to how MIDI vs. audio tracks are handled now that you can record synths. I wouldn't be surprised if optimization in the code is possible in a few places ... You should share that template with Cakewalk support.
FreeFlyBertl, what you wrote makes sense, I wonder too if the new recording synths feature might have caused this. I just shared my template with Cakewalk support. Let's see what happens. Thanks!

Doktor Avalanche Is there a patch for Nebula 3? - I'm on the latest version Run windows update. - I'll check this, but it's Windows 10, so it's probably up to date. Try running Sonar as administrator - I can give this a shot tonight.

SOLVED! (Workaround): I wanted to update all of you that after I shared my templates with Cakewalk and they had the same issues at their end as well with my templates. (works fine on Hopkinton but not on Ipswich). They suggested me two things and solved both the problems. Here they are: 1. Opening a project/template takes long time. - Solution: (This was simple and something I didn't try before) Just save it as a new version again on Ipswich and next time it opens up in normal speed. 2. Performance problem. - Solution: In preferences-->Project-->Record-->"Allow Arm Changes During Playback/Record" has to be disabled. That fixed the problem. Looks like this has some sort of CPU hit on the computer with the new real-time direct instrument track recording feature that was introduced with Ipswich I believe. I do like the "Arming tracks" during playback/record function normally, so would love to be able to enable this without having performance issues.

Nice find! For what it's worth, I'm finding Ipswich on Win 10 preview build 10547 to be the best sonar experience yet. The future's so bright I gotta wear shades.
