Sonar Platinum launching slowly
Hi folks, I'm trying the demo of Sonar Platinum (very nice!) and wondered about one thing: When I open the program it takes about 12 seconds before it launches. Whereas Sonar X1d launches almost immediately. I'm wondering if some of the newer features, reverbs, content etc. are causing it to take longer to open? If so, is there a way to streamline it and remove some of these features to help speed up the launch of the basic program? I use Sonar's basic DAW features but don't really need the built in effects and instruments as I have 3rd party libraries, soft synths and UAD powered plug ins. etc. Sonar Platinum installed automatically online so I didn't see any options to customize the install. I noticed a slower load time since X2 and more so in X3. Just wondering if it's all the new features and content. Anyone have a clue? Cheers! JG

If you are using automatic background scanning check the scan paths in Preferences > Files > VST Settings

I turned off VST auto scan, it was the first thing I tried. It didn't help. Thanks! JG

The major change between X1 and X2a was a shift to new MS libs. That might explain some of the difference.

Sorry, what are MS libs? Can you customize the Platinum installation? It seemed to just automatically install straight from the cakewalk website. Usually there's a list of things you can check or uncheck during a custom install. ? Thanks! JG

The Microsoft C++ Redistributable libraries used by the application. Advanced installs in previous version did provide the ability to pick and choose which plug-ins to install. That is no longer possible. Instead most of the plug-ins are organized into several separate intallers, there is no requirement to install the plug-ins. Whether the plug-ins are installed or not will not affect the load time of the program.

Mine starts up almost instantly, i think it might be more of a computer issue rather than a Sonar issue. I could be wrong though, just my experience... its very quick for me.

Start up time is system dependent but in this case, it is the same system with different versions of the product. There is the general situation of software being designed for contemporary PCs. This can cause newer versions of a product to be more resource hungry. In this case Cakewalk added features like multi-point touch support which forced them to use newer Microsoft libraries. I suspect this explains some of what the OP is seeing. There also may be some configuration differences between the versions of SONAR or the opposite case of using an older versions configuration which may not be appropriate for the newer version.

If its taking that long on a modern system there is something else going on. Do you have control surfaces attached? For me it takes about a second or two at max to load SONAR Platinum from launch to when the UI opens. The first launch on Windows can be slower. Does it take that long even when you close SONAR and reopen?

Okay, weird though, my X1d start up template has ten soft synths inserted and loads instantly, the platinum is just the basic normal template with no synths inserted. These are 64 bit versions. Woodyoflop, are you using 64 bit sonar? Thanks JG

Thanks Noel, no control surfaces attached yet, also using the same settings as my X1d which loads instantly. And yes, loading it more than once to test, first load after boot is always slower for sure. JG

I have the same thing since Platinum. 12 - 15 second start up, at least. Just figured it was a Platinum "thing" since all my Sonars before this started very quickly.

Is the virus scanner setup to scan SONAR? If so, consider adding SONAR to the virus scanner exception list.

Got the same issue. Just presumed it was due to new startup code. In numbers in relation to the kind of VST scan: "On startup" - 29.5 seconds "Manual scan" - 23.2 seconds Thats just me and a stopwatch. Definitely miss the super quick boot of previous generations of Sonar but its not a major problem for me personally. Windows 8.1 - i7

I have the same issue with Platinum. It seems to disappear with the installation of each new update, then gradually slows down again. Doesn't bother me too much so I haven't really looked into it. I know if I have the Faderport connected it slows down significantly, and that it is faster to start with my Behringer X32 connected than it is with my RME Fireface ufx. I presume this is to do with the drivers.

No virus scanner or anything here, no.... as far as I know, it's only loading the basic elements that it comes with. So, there's no way to custom install platinum? I see that you can change the install path, but other than that?

Thanks for the additional posts. I always update windows and defrag my computer. I always turn of quick start windows. I don't think it has anything to do with the obvious... Again, I have X1d opening with a very complex template including a lot of soft synths etc. and it loads in less than 3 seconds. I mentioned the problem occurs with X3 as well. The only thing I haven't asked, is if it may be because it's a demo (Platinum), perhaps there is a certain amount of time used up to check the program status and license etc? jg
