Sonar Video doesn't support VOB? I thought we're Pro Here?
I guess I expect too much? Sonar can only import compressed file formats. so I guess it can't be used for actual pro video... I was supposed to be replacing an audio track, but can only do so with a compressed file to start and finish with another compressed file... Is there something I'm missing here? Keni

VOB isn't a 'pro' format, it's a delivery format for DVD video. Sonar's purpose with video is to allow you to score music to video, video being merely for reference purposes during composition . Generally, you would export audio from Sonar and use it within a video editor. If you're trying to replace only the audio in a compressed file without recompression, you need a special tool to demux audio and video from the compressed file, and then remux that original video stream with your new audio source. In fact, most video editor's do not even do this, the concept being to work with original material. You can look for tools on the Web such as VOBedit that will allow you to mux audio/video streams.

In their defense, supporting VOB is not a sign of being "pro". VOB is a format designed for an end product and a poor choice for editing. I would be more surprised if Sonar did support VOB

Jimbo 88 Hey Keni, If you got 15 minutes...this might help you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh9Ico1HgC0
Thank you very much for sharing that!!! Very generous of you. I'm going to purchase Vegas Home Studio, I didn't know you could add streamers in there! I really with Cakewalk would add such features. Do ever send the final project as a Pro Tools file? That's typically what I've been doing. I'll just "checkerboard" a few stereo tracks in a new Pro Tools project, sync'd to picture, and send the entire soundtrack that way.

Thanks Everybody... I get it... and I am working on original material here... the videographer supplied a DVD, but it only has an older work mix... I'm trying to lay in the final mix and thought I could do this in Sonar... Obviously not... I found a VOB editor called VideoNotepad that seems to do pretty well tho I'm confused by some of it. The audio looks like a mono track but sounds stereo? I was able to make Widescreen avi/wmv/mpg files with good or better audio quality... The avi allowed for full uncompressed 48k audio... The problem is trying to create a new DVD copy... the software has the tool built in, but it doesn't allow me to adjust the burn speed and that machine's DVD burner is old and will no longer burn at full speed... So trying to find a work around was difficult. I finally opted to use the avi and open it in windows DVD maker to create the disc... If vob files aren't "pro", what format is used when working with high end digital video (uncompressed)? Thanks for all the tips... I'll try the video asap too... Keni

I think the main point to be made is that, during composing, the picture is for reference only. You don't need high resolution. That said, Its seems a bit out of the normal for a producer to send you a Dvd video for material. I would think that most would send a dvd data disk with an .mpg file. People differ though. I you watch the video link, you'll see that the author takes the given video and produces a low-res copy for use in sonar. When he's finished, he then takes the rendered audio and mates it back up to the video and renders a reference copy for the producer, and provides the music track as well. It's important to note that this assumes that the final video rendering is done by someone else - the main work product here is the music track.

Vob is normally mpeg2, for the av content at least, you could always try renaming the filefrom .vob to .mpeg before importing?

"The audio looks like a mono track but sounds stereo?" DVD video usually has an audio file that can be used for mono, stereo, and several surround formats. It's all encoded into a streaming MUX, or Multiplex signal, along with the video data.

Thanks guys...
The video jungle is a wild one to deal with these days... What video work I did in the past always used a reference video to compose to then supplying the final audio to the videographer to insert in the final...
But this time I found myself stuck in the middle? I was given a DVD and asked to replace the audio...
I was hoping I could do this within Sonar, but I guess not... I did finally manage using VideoPad (excuse my mis-naming it earlier)...
I am still very confused about which resolutions accompany which file formats and which encoders to use... And what bit rates etc...
Many thanks to all for jumping in with helpful info..

Just an FYI ...Adding streamers in Vegas is something I came up with myself. Vegas does not have a streamer function. If you want to see how I do that, check out this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShFEvnOKOio About your question regarding Protools. I send OMFs with 5-7 audio stems to the person mixing in Protools. Protools imports my audio and places it in the correct spot when I use OMFs.
