Sonar - What's with the name?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but why is Sonar, a DAW host application, named after an echo-location device?

Some people ask me a similar thing about DigiFreq... why?

Many can already guess though that it's a combo of Digital and Frequency.

Greg's a Beatles fan.. and lets face it "yellow submarine" is a bit of a silly name for a DAW

he did go into detail in the 21 years of cakewalk.. or it was another interview.. why cakewalk.. why 12 tone..etc

A PING needs time to return to the transducer. This is how SONAR and RADAR measure distance.
I guess it is a reminder that DAWs always will have latency.

    Sonar, So Good

It's actually from a Shakespeare book according to 'History' section on Cakewalk

    A line from Cymbeline

PHILARIO - Record these words and notes.
SONAR - Shall be like an echo of thou very sound.

The most feasible explanation so far, heh heh.

I've often wondered but never brought myself to ask. I can picture the boardroom meeting..."Well, sonar uses sound, and Das Boot was a ****in' movie, so let's call it that!"

    Hey John,

Yeah, I read about that. It's very cool. Also, very expensive though, but I'd still love to have one... I love vinyl!

The sonar name is not just used by Cakewalk. If you do a search you will find sonar is also a network monitoring set of tools. Sonar is not a copyrighted name. "Cakewalk Sonar" probably is.

Guys, the whole premise of SONAR is how radar systems are designed; from the basic principals of transmitting some sort of radiated signal out into space, and then receiving the reflections of any radiated/intercepted objects. From this, the rate of return of the signal can help to determine the distance of the object, and the strength and footprint of the energy return could also determine the size and nature of the object being radiated. The more rapidly to transmit, the more often you get return signals. More Transmission power (frequency) = Faster Returns (since Time = 1/Frequency)

So in the case of Cakewalk, they probably had a concept that the faster they push out new releases (regardless of how many initial bugs in the release), the faster the rate of return of cashflow from established Cakewalk users. The more you creep in new features (as opposed to fixing old ones), the more you will attract New users that don't know any better and increase your cash return.

BTW, I love Cakewalk. I really don't mean what I said above. I was just trying to add humor is all.

    Sincerely,
    JAB3

They toyed with a few ideas before settling with Sonar

Bonar - For those excited about making music
Donar - For those who like to share their music freely
Honar - For those who like to craft their sound
Lonar - For those who spend long hours with their DAW
Monar - For those who are never happy with their DAW
Tonar - For those wanting the perfect sound.
