Sonar X1 CPU performance

Hey all,

My set up is as follows:

Windows 7 32
4GB RAM
Intel Q6600 Quad Core @ 2.4GHz
Sonar X1a
RME Fireface

When I record more than 3 or 4 tracks (only 1 or 2 minutes each) in 96K my PC performance drops drastically, and it has trouble playing back these files. I hear clicks and pops all over the place because my CPU is being drained.

However, when I look at the performance 'window' at the top right of Sonar X1 it tells me I am only using 1 'core' of my processor and the other three are almost stationary. Is there anyway to adjust this to allow Sonar make full use of the processor and sacrifice everything else whilst I am working in Sonar? Or is it a case that my CPU just isnt powerful enough to handle this high sample rate and large files?

Many Thanks for your help

have you checked "use multiproccesor engine"

Also what latency do you have your RME set at. What driver WDM or ASIO? If you do have multiprocessor engaged then that might be what one would expect with such a low track count and not a lot of plugins.

When a project is not large and not needing a lot of CPU it may need only one core to play it back.

You also have it at a sample rate of 96 kH that might be pushing your disk subsystem a bit. Still at 4 tracks it should be a walk in the park for Sonar. Dare I say a cakewalk?

I forgot to ask what chip set are you using for the firewire. If its not a TI chip that might be the problem.

you have a dual core intel 2.40..it will act as a quad but its still only a dual.when it uses all resourses it will start using the other two..sounds to me you have an issue with your soundcard and not the ram

Hey guys, many thanks for the help. Im really sorry if this is going to sound silly but when you refer to 'chipset' what is this and how do I find it? I am using a Lacie 400 firewire PCI as recommended by RME....that any use?

Driver is ASIO and 'use multiproccessing engine' is checked. Buffer is set at 2.7ms or 256 samples. I have upped this to 1024 and it seems to have made a difference....

Sorry but i'm still getting my head around the rme, its a recent upgrade from a pretty basic interface, so it may need some tweaking

    Thanks once again

I don't know but if they say its good it probably is. The next to try is lower the sample rate.  44.1 is fine for me but many like 48. The other thing if you can is try WDM.

I'm not sure what Chuck is saying you list a quad core Q6600. I have the same CPU.

Have you downloaded ASIO4ALL, asio is very low latency and these are the best drivers, fixed my problems...

Once again, thanks for all the help. I have upped the latency and it seems to have made a huge difference. Sound quality is better, and performance is excellent. Seems strange that it would have that much effect, but I think that it has cured my problem. Thanks for all the help

ASIO4ALL is for cards that don't have asio support NOT to replace the already great RME drivers.   It's kind of like buying a Porche and then putting a Saturn engine in it.

Audio track playback shouldn't load your CPU significantly at all, even if it's only running on one core, unless you have a heavy FX plug-in load in the project.

And you shouldn' have to run your latency anywhere near that high. 256 samples should be fine. You should start by downloading and the free DPC Latency Checker, and running it.

Check out the thread linked below to get an idea what your Q6600 should be able to do. This thread was started back when the Q6600 was probably the most common "power-user" CPU:

Hey there brundlefly. Thanks for info.....I downloaded the dpc checker and it is telling me 'some devices behave badly' or something along those lines. Latency is varying between 200ms to 1000ms.....any ideas?

HI, The usual suspects for DPC latency are drivers and networks. if you haven't already go to your device manager and disable the wireless network card, and LAN card, modems etc. Try disabling all the items in your device manager that you don't need whilst keeping an eye on the DPC checker. I recently had a problem where I was having a a spike every 10ms I had turned off the wireless card but not disabled it... As soon as I disabled it ...hey presto spike disappeared. HTH

i disab;ed the wireless card and it seems to have helped but I cant be sure.... do I have to turn it on and off every time or is there a fix?

Jon....when you say go over the system...is this something you can help with on here? Many Thanks once again to all
