Try inserting a softsynth this way.
Open the browser usually on the right side of the track pane. Fins the VSTi plugin you want and double click it. A window opens with numerous options select fort a midi channel and FIRST audio track. Now you can create some midi data by copying a loop into the midi track or play some notes on a connected keyboard and away you go. Make sure that your audio track connects the Master bus which in turn has to connect to your audio device outputs.
Do the tutorials. Sonars reference manual (help file) is over 2000 pages of very useful information.
Open up Sonar and press F1 which opens on the tutorial page. Do the one for using soft synths.
