Sonar X1 Le input Problem

Hi, I have a roland quad capture and can't seem to get any input in Sonar X1 Le. I know to use ASIO drivers and believe I have it configured correctly but have been messing around with it for hours and haven't fixed it any help would be appreciated, Thanks.

What do you have selected for Devices>Input and Output Drivers, Driver Settings and Playback and Recording?
What input are you selecting in the track when you try to record?

The Input Drivers I have selected are
    Quad Capture (2) 1-2
    Quad Capture (2) 3-4
    Quad Capture (2) Main

    Output Drivers
    Quad Capture (2) 1-2
    Quad Capture (2) 3-4

    Driver Settings
Playback Timing Master- Quad Capture (2) 3-4
Record Timing Master- Quad Capture (2) 3-4

Playback and Recording I have Asio Drivers selected and triangular. I also have share drivers with other programs and use multiprocessing engine selected.

When you say which input I am selecting I am assuming you mean the list in the track box in which I have tried
    Left Quad Capture (2) 3-4
    Right Quad Capture (2) 3-4
    Stereo Quad Capture (2) 3-4
and none of these made a difference I am also assuming it should be left quad capture as I have a single mic plugged into the left channel of the quad capture?

The problem I am having is I can't get any input to show at all in any of the level meters (Not sure of the technical name) hence I am obviously unable to record.

I also opened a project I finished about 2 months ago (the last time I used it) and can't get it to play back at all through the interface?

The (2) looks a little suspicious.
I don't have a Quad, so I can't tell you what it's supposed to be. Perhaps there is more than 1 driver to select from (maybe for 32-bit or 64-bit?).
You might try posting this in the X-series forum. Lots of folks visit there and you might get more suggestions.

Just from the high level, does the quad have an interface monitor program that you can see the levels coming into the interface and going out from it? Most interfaces I've used have some program like this.

Start by making sure you have an input level on the interface.

It looks like you have things dialed in ok in Preferences. I didn't see any thing obviously wrong.

You're set to ASIO. You have the timing masters set. You have the drivers selected. As you point out you can hear through the device during playback when you play an older project.

On thing you might try is dropping a loop onto an audio track and playing that... can you hear it?

On the input tracks, did you check the INPUT ECHO buttons? Is solo selected on a track that doesn't have an input? That can catch you by surprise sometimes.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Yes , gswitz your onto it.
    • Graphical Control Panel software provides fast, intuitive control of the VS Preamps.
Check your settings in your interfaces GUI first.

But I also understand your using the left input on the front.
That will be called - Left 1 /2  or close to that.
Left ( 3/4 )  will be on the back.

Then also check your Master bus is set to the correct output 1/2. Sometimes they can change to things like the 3/4 or SPDIF if you started Sonar without the interface turned on etc. Taking the time to understand your signal path is improtant.

    Hi, Thanks for your replies.
Gswitz I think you misread my comment I opened an old file and couldn't get it to play back at all. As in it would play but no sound. I am definitely getting input into the interface as the quad capture has an input level meter on the front and it is clearly working, I also opened the asio panel from sonar preferences and could see input levels in that but still not in sonar. I checked all solo and input echo button and still no difference.

Cactus Music I have no idea what GUI is or how to check it's settings. I also have checked the master bus and is set to stereo 1-2.

I am able to play sound via YouTube, iTunes etc through the interface it just doesn't want to communicate with Sonar and is driving me nuts!

Re: Sonar X1 Le input Problem 2014/05/26 06:12:21 (permalink)
    Reid Sampson,

    I'm sure that's incredibly frustrating.

If you look at this video..
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Sb1ES7nyFs
The GUI I was mentioning is shown around 1:10 seconds into the video. I think it will be the same thing you found when you clicked 'open asio panel' from within Sonar.

I think you have all good stuff. I know that we can get your Quad Capture working with Sonar.

Trouble shooting where the problem is always takes a little time.

    The product manual is here...
    http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/1166/support/

Basically, We want to try to find where the audio is failing with the device.

    Things we know...
    - we can hear audio through the device when listening to a youtube video
    - we can see level meter move on the front of the device when we play the attached instrument

    Things we've tried
    - Create a new Sonar Project
    - Go to preferences and ensure we have the correct drivers selected
    - Ensure we are recording audio files of the correct size
    - check the playback and timing master

    Next,
    - Insert an audio track into the project
    - select the track input on the Track Inspector and set it to the correct audio input on the device
    - click the record button on the track
    - click the input echo button on your track

If you have a microphone plugged in, you may need to switch on the phantom power on the back of the device.
If you have a guitar or bass instrument plugged into input 1, switch on the Hi-Z switch on the back of the device.

The GUI Control Panel gives you access to the compressors for the input channels. p31 of the user manual.

You can check the signal flow from the Device Menu.

    ...

Now, from within Sonar, if you play your instrument and do not see the level bounce on the track meter, you still have an issue.
At this point, try dragging a wave file loop into your project and playing the project.
    Questions
    - Does the level bounce on the track during playback?
    - Does the level bounce on the master bus?
    - do you have the master bus muted?
    - what is the master bus output set to in the track/bus inspector?

Re: Sonar X1 Le input Problem 2014/05/26 08:39:33 (permalink)
    So...
I inserted an audio track set the input in the track inspector to left quad capture 1-2 I tried stereo as well (made no difference), clicked the record and input echo button and still no bounce on any of the level meters at all. I have a mic plugged in and have headphones plugged in directly to interface and can hear the mic through them but not on sonar. I know for sure the mic doesn't require phantom power.

I then inserted an audio file and hit play, nothing no bounce in master bus or audio track. The audio track outputs to the master bus which isn't muted and the master bus outputs to stereo Quad Capture 1-2 however I have tried all the options, no difference.

The problem doesn't have something to do with rewire does it? The only reason I think of this is because I use Sibelius 7 and the place where I study uses Sibelius and other recording software such as logic and pro tools and often after people have been using the recording programs Sibelius sound won't work because it is in rewire mode and I'm assuming it could work visa versa. Could the same problem apply here?

    Quad Capture (2) 1-2
    Quad Capture (2) 3-4
    Quad Capture (2) Main

I am now looking at this (2) you have in there,, I think you might have something fishy with installing 2 sets of drivers and Sonar is looking for device # 2 and not 1.
Might be a good idea to totally uninstall all the drivers and start again. And always make sure your using the same USB port. Did you change ports and re install the drivers?
Everything else you have listed shows as being correct, but that (2) bugs me...

Do you have 'share drivers with other software' checked?

So, I finally got time to sit down and fiddle with it again. I uninstalled and reinstalled asio drivers. I got rid of the (2) people were concerned about however the original problem still exists. I did discover that WDM drivers fix the problem and it works fine I get input and can play my previous project back. I still need asio drivers to work though as when I first got the interface I kept experiencing latency problems until I used asio drivers. Any more ideas?
And yes I do have share drivers with other software ticked.
