Sonar X1 MOTU 896mk3 Phones Config. Monitoring

I can't seem to get my phones output to work the way I think it should work. If I set it to phones, it doesn't work at all. If I have it set to mirror the main out. It will only be as loud as the master volume.

I don't know what I need to do here. But I do know what I want to happen.
I need to be able to turn my main speakers down and still be able to monitor with my headphones for recording. I can't figure out how to do that!

I'm using Sonar x1. I thought I should set a buss up or something but I'm an idiot and I don't know what the hell I'm doing. It's just not coming together for me in my brain. How can I route my mains to a buss, turn them down and still have a buss I can monitor with phones? I don't know it's just not coming together for me.  I see in the buss pain there is the Master or Main outs and the stereo outs left and right. Then several empty Master faders I have no idea what to do with them. I can create a buss but I don't know how to make it a phones buss. Am I on the right track.

Hep me, Hep me please! I got's the mad cow disease!

With my 896HD if I select Main Outs (not master) for the master bus I get signal at both the MOTU's main outs and the headphones.

When I just want the headphones I select Headphones out for the master bus and the Main Outs go silent.

    Try that.

    best regards,

I'm very very confused. Why isn't there already a phones buss set up right out of the gate?

On my Mk3 I have the phones set to phones and the main out assign to 1and 2. No problems there! When I have my phones plugged into the phones jack, there isn't any output unless I have it set up just like the main out.

So, I have to create a buss for the phones? I don't understand how to do that.

I don't think you are going to have to set up a bus for phones... you simply select the phones as the output of your existing master bus..

My MOTU 896 has a hardware switch that offers more options but I haven't used that in sveral years so I simply forget the details about it.

I have it set so that the phones always output what the Main Outs have going on.

If I bypass the Main Outs by selecting a different output in SONAR then I can, as I mentioned above, send to the Headphone out and keep the Main Outs silent.

Where is the output of the Master Buss? Effects Sends, I dont' really see an output per say.  And, I selected phones from that and it didn't work anyway. Sonar should sence there is a phones connection just like it automatically routes to the Master Mains out. There should be 2 faders right next to each other called Mains and Phones. If the Phones is engaged in the MOTU software to control the Phones, Sonar should recognize that and automatically route a buss for it no?

I've used a million recording programs and never had to go fishing for a headphones control.  Who records audio and doesn't need a phones out? I have been switching off my monitors to record sax and the such and using the mains out on the 896 to monitor from. Then I have to go switch the damn things back on when I'm done so all of us can hear the mix.  I got 3 people over here trying to figure it out.  Nothing seems to do anything.

So, you have to change the output in the Mains to Phones? You Shouldn't have to change anything! Really it's 2 stereo outs! It doesn't matter what they are called! One goes to the Mains and one goes to the front of the interface. They should function independently like every other recording program I've ever seen in my life.

I guess this means you haven't set up a master bus.

    Yes? No? Maybe?

Why would I need to set up a Master Bus? It's already there along with metronome. In the MOTU audio console I have phones set to phones. I don't see phones as any option anywhere in the options for any buses. The default for the output for all the channels is Master. That works fine. What do I need to create?

    Try this,
If, as you have stated above, you have the default output set to Master,  I would assume this is your master buss.  At the bottom of this buss you might see see something labled as 896HD-Main Out.  If so right-click on that.  You should see several output options such as 896HD 1/2; 896HD 3/4 . . . . PHONES.  Select phones.  That sould switch the output to your headphones.  If you don't see Headphones as an option go to CONFIG--> AUDIO and check the tab that has all of your MOTU INPUTS & OUTPUTS.  Make sure the headphones is selected and then repeat what I previously suggested regarding your Master buss
