Sonar X1 Producer cannot export more than 256 separate tracks
When I select "tracks" as the export source on a 600-track test project (each track has ten seconds of audio on it), Sonar will get as far as exporting 256 files before it simply quits. I decided to test this by adding one second to each track's audio, and trying it again with the exact same result. This shows it is a software problem and not a problem on my end perhaps to do with memory capacity (I have 4gb, should not be a problem). I then deleted all but 256 tracks, and extended the length of the audio in each and every track to 1 minute. Sonar was able to export 256 separate files from 256 separate tracks (1 minute each in length) without any problem at all. This sounds like a bug to me and I've submitted a report. I was wondering if anyone else here has encountered this same phenomenon? I'm very sure that some of us have projects that exceed this 256-file limit... like filmmakers for example.

I sorry I do not have an answer but I do have a question. Why do you want to be able to export 600 separate tracks, I am genuinely curious and I am not trying to be disrespectful.

There are never disrespectful questions, Wookiee, only questions that are not asked :) My answer is: To organize and compact a music collection into one file format, for portability. Imagine that "User" has 600 assorted types of music in "User's Music Folder". Some Wav, Flac, Mp3 320kbps or 96kbps etc... It is an easy drag-and-drop (or import) into Sonar for all of the songs at one time... if User's computer can handle it. Now those files can be exported all at once, to be the same file type (Wav, Mp3...) because each song is on a separate track. ...For exporting Mp3, this is beautiful as many songs can be converted at once and that makes Sonar the ultimate Mp3 encoder. A person can encode their entire collection of finished Sonar Wav projects to Mp3, and dump them to a USB stick to listen in the car on the stereo. Or the Ipod. Or to email them to family and friends :) that's the best part. It does not seem like it is "Unlimited Tracks" anymore when something like this happens. If Sonar gives us the ability to make (and use) 600 tracks, it should not accept that command to export 600 separate tracks when it will always stop exporting at 256.

Hmm.... bit of a fringe case, this, wouldn't you say? The program does support unlimited tracks. What you've found is that the export option doesn't support something that, realistically, is never going to come up when using the program for the purpose it's designed for.

It is a little like saying my car is capable of 150mph but when I tried running it into a wall at only 120mph it was smashed to bits...

There are other programs that will do this and do it better- -because your files would still need to be encoded outside of Sonar.

Sound Forge has an excellent batch converter for this kind of task.

Even Audacity does batch conversion.

Thanks for the answer and to some extent I sympathise. Though I agree with the others that an audio editing package with batch function would probably be better suited to the job. It could also be a useful too to add to your audio production toolkit. The other method would be to make a feature request here cakewalk feature request though I would not hold your breath.
