Sonar X1 Producer - file size and storage
Hi all, I am a newbie Sonar user who is just setting up my studio so bear with me. :) How big is the average file size for an regular Sonar project (say... 10 tracks or less?) My reason is for asking is that I have a friend that uses Sonar and he has all of his projects on a separate external hard drive. According to him, he gets better performance out of Sonar itself when the Windows and system files are separate from the Sonar files. So then I'm thinking a 1 TB hard drive will get me down the road pretty well for a long time. -ryan

It is recommended to have a hard drive for the OS and Host and another to record the audio on.
Hard drives should be at least 7200rpm
It is hard to say a average file size as this will depend on the sample rate you are recording at and also how long your tracks are
If you look at the sample content in X1 and look at the file size this will give you a rough example as I think there around 1.5gb although I could be wrong :)

Hi. I follow the same procedure: external HDD 7200 RPM to hold projects & their data.

Streaming/accessing projects from an External is not the most efficient way to manage your projects. If you're using a desktop, there's no reason at all not to install separate internal hard drives so that you have disc 1 for your OS & Progs, disc 2 for your Cakewalk projects & disc 3 for any massive sample libraries, such as BFD or EWQLSO Use external(s) for backup purposes.

SOrry I did not notice the op saying it was external but +1 for the 3 drives.

A 1T drive is more than enough ry1633. It is handy to have all projects on one drive and sample libraries etc on another but it is not compulsory or anything.

Well you can get performance gains if you have them on separate drives, especially if you do a lot of sample streaming. It makes sense not to have the heads on one drive thrashing around all over the place.
