Sonar X1 & WMP - Strange Experience
Just finished a short recording session in Sonar X1 and exported it as a .wav file. I then played it back in Windows Media Player and it sounded very different, more bass and a quite a bit of limiting going on (pumping effect). I tried messing with a few settings in Sonar thinking it was something to do with the export, then I tried playing it through VLC media player and it sounds the same as Sonar. So at least all is well and when burnt to a CD and played back on hi-fi equipment it sounds okay. All I can think of is that WMP has some kind of auto limiting/compression or something of that ilk. Anyone else had a similar experience.

Don't forget to do a car and clock radio test! When these audio tests pass then you can be fairly certain playback will be consistent. 98% of listeners do not have quality playback equipment and will only be listening through Windows Media Player (WMP) or their MP3 player in a car or ear buds. So it might be worth it to look into why there was such a difference in WMP. Also, you didn't mention if the playback through WMP was in the same room as where you mixed it? Maybe you have some EQ setting turned on in WMP that pumps up the bass? In that case, the bass might be set too loud in your mix or there are frequencies prominent in the mix that are making it muddy and are then accentuated in WMP - again! A situation like this is a sign that the mixing room is not tuned which results in your ear trying to compensate by turning things up or down.

Did a bit of digging through WMP, its not easy to navigate. Anyway found out that 'SRS WOW effect' was turned on. Now everything is back to normal. Thanks for making me look again John.

Yep, the 'SRS WOW [that sucks] effect' will do it everytime. But as BlixYZ points out, it should sound good either way. Also, make sure that you play it in environments that are not your mixing room. When you said you played it on "hi-fi equipment" I was wondering where the hi-fi equipment was, because this is not a good test if it's in the same room where you mixed. Be sure to do take the CD you made and play it in a car because you might find its still bass heavy. I would also play it through a CD clock radio (usually mono).
