Sonar X1 hangs on install

It seems like Sonar X1 stops during install. First I get a message that my OS is not supported. I'm running Windows XP SP3 which is on the supported system list. So, I clicked continue.
It started extracting files and go about 2/3 of the way and just stopped. The UI just says "Extracting Files..." I let it sit for almost 30 minutes in that state. It was taking no CPU time so I assumed it was hung. I killed the process and restarted my machine. I tried again and go the same message.

Any ideas?

It's possible that you are uncovering another bug. (if so, that is much more than a bug but i'll keep to topic).

I don't think anyone here has installed X1 on Windows XP and I highly doubt it was tested by 'Cakewalk' QA.

Make sure you have hdd space which I'm sure you did. Also make sure you have administrative privileges.

Try to go into safe mode by hitting f6 during boot and then do safemode with networking. Then try installing.

The DVD could also have an error on it or it's a rare possibility it's your drive. Use your dvd writing software to check the DVD for errors. If there are, create an ISO from the disk and then mount. That could work.

It's rare, but it could actually be your CPU is conking out... basically over heating, locking up during heavy extended load. That's if the whole screen freezes. Check your bios CPU temp settings when you reboot.

Likely it's a bug though with X1.. that's where i'd put my money.

I'd say most SONAR users in fact are still on XP SP3.

Cakewalk fully support WIN XP SP3 as an OS for X1. It's possible that you have faulty media ie there's a problem with the DVD. especially considering the errror.

also make sure that you do have WIN XP SP3 installed. It may be worthwhile reinstalling SP3

Give Cakewalk Tech support a call. This kind of problem is right up their alley.

I just got of the phone with Tech for a similar install problem. Despite having downloaded the X1 Essential files 5 time in the last 24 hours, I keep getting a "corrupted files" error when trying to install. The techie I spoke with said there's an alternate download site and he's emailing me the link to it. I'd pay the extra for a physical disc but why do that if there's an install problem related to that as well?

I figured I'd roadtest the Essential before I botherer with the Producer/Studio versions but I'm having second thoughts after reading how many problems guys seem to be having with the software. At this point, I can't even evaluate the program. It's frustrating!

I don't think anyone here has installed X1 on Windows XP and I highly doubt it was tested by 'Cakewalk' QA.
I've been running on Windows XP SP3 32 Bit and it is actually runs quite fine! I don't encounter any crashes, but of course, the well known bugs do exist. There are many XP users on these forums, some with good experiences, and some with bad - not unlike VISTA and Windows 7 users.

JVGiannini: Is this the download version, or the DVD set? If it is the download version, maybe it became corrupted. If it is the DVD set, try copying the contents of DVD #1 to a folder on the hard drive, then try to run the install from the hard drive.

The fact that it says the OS is not supported might be worth a call to Cakewalk. Is this XP 64 Bit by chance? From what I understand, XP 64 Bit or Media Center is not supported by X1? If it's a standard 32 bit version - then maybe the SP3 installation is faulty. Since SP3 is required, maybe re-installing that could help.

Just throwing a couple ideas out there! Good luck.

... make sure you have administrative privileges.
JVGiannini: This is important. Make sure your XP account has administrative privileges, and is not setup as a user account
Try to go into safe mode by hitting f6 during boot and then do safemode with networking. Then try installing.
JVGiannini: I would not try this. Safe mode is to troubleshoot windows, not install software.

JVGiannini: don't listen to this guy. He has no idea what he's talking about.

    1. It's not likely a bug.

    2. Many, Many users are using XP on this forum. I have one installation of Win7 and one of XPSP3 and they both work fine.

    3. If there was no HDD space windows would tell you and the installer would say something to the effect of 'not enough space'. I know because I did it before.

    4. Safe mode installing will not work correctly.

    5. If you create an ISO from a faulty disc you have a faulty ISO. A huge lack of logic right there. I can't believe you actually recommended that.

    6. Not likely a bug.

What is likely happening is you have Media Center/64-Bit XP or your OS installation is wonky. Another thing which may be hanging up your system is a virus scanner. Make sure that is completely disabled before attempting to install. I would give CW tech support a call though. They've been helpful when I've had installation issues in the past (SONAR 6-7). They also recommended I disable startup applications in msconfig then re-enable them after installation.

Did you download it or is it from the box set?

First, I am running Windows XP SP3. I would be surprised if SP3 is causing issues. I've been running on that version since it was out without any issues other than expected performance issues.

    I disabled my anti-virus.

I am using a download. I am going to attempt to download everything again. I have attempted the installation about 3 times and it hangs in the same place, about 2/3rds through extracting files, every time. Hopefully things will work after I do another download. If not, I will give Cakewalk Tech a call.
    Thanks for all the responses

Dude i had this same problem, the installation just seems to hang :(

I tried the download version .... no joy same problem

i bought the boxed version .......  no joy same problem

tried installling on laptop running vista, installed with no problems

in the end i fluked it by pressing ctrl alt del to bring up the task manager and deleted the process at the top of the page which was wininstll3.1 or something very similiar to that

the installation resumes and sonar x1 installs as it should!!

i have no idea why but that's what i did and now sonar x1 works great (apart from the known bugs).....roll on the next patch update and a big thankyou to cakewalk for creating a daw with an amazing workflow .

ps i even tried a complete new installation of xp and the x1 installation still hangs but the steps above sorts the problem for me

Resolved! I downloaded the files again and everything installed and I'm up and running. Now my problem is my 5 year Dell XPS 400 does not perform well enough but then again, I already knew that.

Time to reach into the wallet.

    Thanks for all the responses.

    Jimmybreakz,

    You're the man.

I did what you did, is to use the Windows Task Manager to kill Wininst32, and the installation is continue.

I guess 1 of the component like C++ Run Time or plugins hangs that cause the installation stop. Kill Wininst32 did help resume the process.

Thanks my man, you save my headache.

I installed X1 essentials on my custom DAW which runs XP PRO SP3.  I had to use another computer to get SP3 since the disk came with SP2 and the DAW is totally off line.

I got SP3 installed and the installation of X1 went perfectly. No problems.

I do believe what I did though to install it, was to run it as administrator. Right click the icon and select RUN AS.... then select Administrator.

There are a few things that install correctly when they are run as administrator. And cake products do fall into this category.
