Sonar X1b x64 + Windows 7 SP1 x64 + Tascam FW 1884 x64 ..... calling all users

Hi all

Looking to set up Sonar X1b x64 for a friend who wants to use their Tascam FW 1884 with it  [ they have an RME BabyFace as their audio interface ]........... so, not being too familiar with the unit, I am calling on my fellow forum users of  Sonar X1b  X64  +  Windows 7 X64  +  Tascam FW 1884 x64 Driver.

=> what are, if any,   the issues / problems / glitchs / quirks / non-functioning features / limitations  etc ....... when using the Tascam FW 1884  purely and only as a control surface  with Sonar X1b  x64  and  Windows 7  SP1 x64  ?
All comments / help  much appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

While the Tascam road has been a bit rocky a time or two there are still many of us using the FW1-1884 with good results.

    Thanks Tom

My apologies upfront if I am a bit confused, but after looking at your page and links  [ absolutley brilliant I might add ]  in terms of using the FW1884, are the  main issues in terms of using the FW1884 just as a Control Surface that:-

    - that the EQ buttons no longer directly map to Sonars X1's Sonitus EQ or Pro Channel EQ (?)

    - its not clear to me if the  "master "  red-track-record-enable  button  [ in the middle of the unit ]  works as it should for each track  (?)

    - the list of  user-assignable  functions for each  user-assignable-button is not as complete as it used to be under 8.5.3 - I gather this is an   X1 issue not a FW 1884 specifc issue (?)

    - lastly, do the buttons that have  pre-set / pre-determined functions  [ ie: the Shortcut Control Panel buttons on the left of the unit ]    work as they are factory labelled / assigned to do with X1b (?)

    Many thanks again,
    TomG

+1 for all the great work by Tom Deering to put that reference together!  I had the tiniest hand in a bit of the content, as did others, but he deserves all credit for collating everything for us.

TomG, I do not use many or even most of the features of the FW-1884.  I use it for transport control and mixing, and that's about it.  Maybe recording one or two audio channels.  So, I don't know the answers to your more detailed questions.

I do think, though, that the Pro Channel in X1 cannot be controlled by the FW-1884.  This is not a criticism of Tascam (and fellow posters know I'm not shy about calling them out when warranted) because the last SONAR driver for the FW-1884 was posted back in, I think, SONAR 6.  Worse, the user guide refers to something like SONAR 2 or 4.   As a discontinued product, I do not see Tascam contracting with Frontier Design (who have always been supportive) to rewrite the SONAR driver for X1.

As to the preset buttons on the left, I only use a few, but I recall testing them and most did nothing in X1.  However, as stated, I wouldn't know whether they worked or not in some cases, so I'm not a fair tester and you should not rely on that answer.

I quickly tested the buttons on the left within a project.  Here are the good results:

    Flip - works
    Pan - works
    ...
    Save /  F1 - works
    Revert / F2 - works
All Safe F3 - not sure what it does
    CLR Solo / F4 -works
    Cut - works
    Del - works
Copy - did not seem to do anything, but:
    Paste - works
    Undo - works
Alt/CMD, Shift, & Ctrl - not sure how to test

    Thanks for testing  riojazz

    Looks like most of the  " direct-function "  buttons work whilst  [ maybe ]  most of the  " modifier-function " buttons [ ctrl / shft / alt ... ]  maybe dont.

    Really appreciated.

The Ctrl, Shift and Alt may very well work; I just did not know any way to test that.

    TomG,
I'm on the road so I can't help.
Like Matt (riojazz) I don't use the modifier keys so I can't speak to that either.
I'll be home on Tuesday and can answer any specific questions then.

I use the Ctrl, and Shift buttons when dragging a track to copy or moving in time and they work perfect. CTrl-Clicking also selects multiple items as it should. The Alt key works with the edit tools as it should as well. :)
