Sonar X1d <3 V-Studio 700 ?

I posted this question in the vs-700 forum too, but since it
got alot to do with sonar x1 i'll post it here as well.

I'm planning on buying the v-studio 700 bundle.
(And I mean soon.. Like tomorrow. ..Or even yesterday)

My question is just this:
Should I do it?

I've read some complaints about the surface being more adapted
to sonar 8 and therefor loses some of it's awesomeness when
using it with sonar x1. How true is this?

At the moment my audio interface is an RME HDSP9652
and if I decide to go with the vs-700 i'll sell this.
I've always loved RME's hardware.

Is the vs-700 setup as reliable as RME? (i understand there are no
objective answers to this, but you may have thoughts about it anyways..)
I mean this in a driver/software sense, since it's impossible to compare
the VS-700 to HDSP9652 hardware, do to the lack of AD/DA on the HDSP..

Thanks in advance!

Updates for the control surface tend to lag behind updates to the program, but it's all up to speed now with the X1d update. I think it's a great system.

Reliability-wise, I've had mine for about a year now I think, and I've never had a problem. Updating the firmware to the latest version is a bit of a hassle, and you'll need to follow the instructions on the main website carefully, but you only have to do that once.

Thanks for the quick reply, John! :)
Sounds like I really should get one of these! ;)

Before I buy anything I always dive into all information about the device I can find. I want to know as much as possible to avoid getting unwanted suprises.

I was just checking out the user manual for the VS-700 and read a bit about the Roland Phantom VS and it's effects.

Do you know if it's possible to apply these effects and use them "outside the synthesizer" to, let's say, apply an effect-send and get a nice reverb on your in-signal when recording?
(But just recording the dry signal ofcourse)

I've never used the Fantom. I set it all up and got it working when I first got the unit, but I've never really dug into it since. So not the right person to ask, really.

+ 1 for the VS-700 works great for me now with the X1d upgrade. Same for the phantom I have played with it and works fine but have not dug deep I do think though if you are using a lot of synth its a fantastic tool to have. I am not using a lot of synths and use it from time to time with default sounds

I use the Vs 700 control surface  and like it  a lot. I have the V studio i/o Rack But Choose to use 2 RME UFxs for i/o due to increased expandability, inserts, much better converters and pre amps IMHO. The 700R is a nice sounding unit but Roland did not build in the quality i/o and upgrade choices needed to make on a level  playing field with the vs 700c. IMHO . Things change so fast with digital audio that one would go broke trying to keep up with all the latest. I would look for a hardware company that offers good quick support, frequently updated trouble free drivers. To Me Sonar is one of the best for software but RME beats mostly everyone on rock solid up to date drivers and timely support with affordable excellent quality.
I do not have any association with Synthax or RME other then I use their products and I like them a lot. I would buy the vs700c and a UFX fireface / USB for I/O  If you really want  a 700 R I have one for sale in Great working condition but with some rack rash. It has been updated to the dated firmware  $1300 OBO

    thanks for the responses! :)

anniedog: I've also used RME for a very long time now. I got my HDSP when PCI still was the way to go, and I really think they're awesome. They still make updates for my device and I've never had any problems with it what so ever :)

My original plan was actually just to get the 700C.
However.. When I started to read about everything you can control inside the I/O-unit with the control surface (like controlling mic-pre volumes and such) I started thinking, if you might loose much of the control surface nice features by just buying this separately..

I also started to wonder about how much other things are connected between the units...

    * The headphone jacks on the control surfce, for example. Is it possible to use these without the I/O?

    * ..And also the line-in on the control-surface. Since there are no outputs on this unit,
I'm guessing you'll have to have the I/O unit to have use of this input?

Thanks for the offer of buying your I/O unit, anniedog. But since I live in sweden and can get a new one here for around $1057 (wich is the different between buying just the 700C and the whole package here) I think I'll have to say no to you offer. :) (I don't think the transportation costs for getting it across the atlantic would be very pleasent either) ;P

My thoughts around the Phantom V is that I probably would use it mostly for getting down ideas fast and simple.
What I really would like is the function to be able to use the Phantoms effects, on other sound sources than it's built in synth engine though...

It would be really nice to know if anyone still is woking at all to improve the v-studio, or if it is (as many suspects) a dead and forgotten project.. =/ I know they worked alot to get the VS700-X1-relationship to work out. But I haven't found any news about recent updates for the v-studio 700 itself.

You're quite right. If you don't have the IO, then master volume control, headphone sockets and controls and console aux input all don't do anything. Which isn't the end of the world, but they're great features to have. And yes, for recording, you can control the input levels, low cut, pad and hardware compressor from the console if you're using the IO, which is really useful. I think it works best as a complete set-up.

Regarding updates, there isn't anything much significant that it needs. I'd like more flexibility in remapping of controls, maybe, but I can't think of anything else.

Loptec ...i own a fireface 400 and i use only my VS 700 ..and keep my fireface for traveling .....

So for the converters , drivers and all : i validate it 100 %

For the integration , you will have a learning curve but when you used to ...really hard to not work with ...., you can go for it without thinking twice ...you can buy one and try it and give it back if you don't like it ....

If you pass by Paris ..France , i will welcome you with pleasure for a test (my studio ) or at the Paris SAE where we introduced (Me as a user , producer and teacher and Roland CE) a VS 700 based studio !!
