Sonar X2 Essential - will this be ok for me ?
Hi Many years ago I used an old version of Sonar and I'm now wanting to purchase a newer package to use on Windows 7. I used the software to record Midi tracks from my keyboard, using the stave/score view mainly, so that I could see an arrangement building up on screen, track by track. like looking at sheet music. I cant seem to find much detailed information on the Essential package. Can anyone confirm that it is capable of displaying a score, as my old version did ? Thanks in advance Chris

I think it does but beware... apparently a lot of folks have a BIG problem with staff view. Sonar is great and all but if you are looking for something to specifically compose MIDI tracks using notation you may want to look at other options. Now watch as people come in here to either agree with me or yell at me. lol

Sorry... I got that backwards. I thought you wanted to write in notation and then send it out to a synth. Playing and having it show up in Staff View should probably work okay but I've never tried. It's trying to input data to the Staff View where things get weird.

I'm not sure if it will transcribe notes from a MIDI controller but maybe check out Finale Notepad. It's free.

Sonar X2 wil work fine for recording a MIDI keyboard and displaying the notes in the staff view.

John Sonar X2 wil work fine for recording a MIDI keyboard and displaying the notes in the staff view. I'm using Essential and it's doing just fine. (Should I run into some extra cash, I may upgrade..) There aren't too many limitations at all. Of course, you do not get those fine ProChannel modules, but that's not a game-stopper at this level. You don't get nearly as many synths and plug-ins either, but that is the bargain we are opting for. My only wish is that control surface automation recording wasn't limited to 'touch' mode only - but then again recording automation just might properly be considered a bit beyond the basic user's normal repertoire.

Super G you should really get X2 Producer not so much for yourself so much but by you having it, it would be great to have you working with it and replying to questions on this forum. You will love it. We need all the help we can get! If you are thinking I was not talking about Essential I was. All Xx Sonars have the same Staff View.

Honestly, I really do enjoy helping others, it's my nature. Right now, I'm between jobs, so I'm strictly on a budget. I'm crossing my finger's though, I've had a few interviews just recently. I'm looking to get my hands on a copy of Producer, I wanna TC Electronics Desktop Konnect, an RE-20, a ..., ugh... ...I better concentrate on getting a job first - I got kinda used to sleeping under a roof and eating hot food...

Thanks so much guys. Really helpful. I've a Yamaha Tyros keyboard. It has multitracking capability on board but its really clunky to use, so I prefer to use a computer screen. What I do is to build up arrangements one track at a time by recording live playing from the Tyros to Sonar (or whatever) and building up a multitrack Midi. I use the built-in Tyros "voices" as I usually replay the Midi back through the keyboard to record to WAV. My use of Sonar is a pretty simple one. Thanks again Chris
