Sonar X2 Producer ,RME PCIE no sound

I have just built my new windows 64bit daw and are having problems trying to get sound out of it, i have installed all the latest drivers from 64bit RME and updated sonar to X2a , i have made sure that the right Audio device are selected under preferences , playback and recording driver mode i have selected WDM/KS and followed the instruction on the cakewalk site for the settings. Midi seems to be getting a signal but  the master and other channels don't light up, I haven't been able to get sound out of the system at all if anyone can help .
Thanks
Sergio

Hi Sergio, and welcome! There is another thread posted that you may want to check out (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/2954809). It sounds like you are trying to play MIDI (note info), but not hearing sound (audio). Check out that thread, as there are some good explanations.

Basically, a MIDI channel is simply note information (no audio), so it must be "played" by a soft synth. If you insert a soft synth and assign the output of your MIDI track to that synth, you should be able to hear sounds. Please let us know if that doesn't answer your question.

    Happy New Year!

Hello Mettelus, thanks for the reply , I know that midi makes no sound and it has to be routed to a synth and i have done that but still no sound. I inserted a new soft synth then made sure the out goes to master as default maybe i have not setup the routing properly mmm .. more to read up on. The other thing is if i put a audio cd into the pc and hit play there is still no sound any ideas?

Okay, I need to step back a second... close SONAR and hit the Start button, type in "sound" and select "Change sound card settings" from that listing. Is Windows recognizing your sound card there? You "should" be able to see it, click on it, and hit the "Configure" button... the next window should have a "test" button. Does that play?

"If" Windows and SONAR are trying to use the same card, you can either force windows to recognize something other than what SONAR uses (allowing SONAR to use ASIO mode), or will have to set SONAR to WDM mode (Preferences->Audio->Playback and Recording).

Not sure why you are using WDM mode, I would think RME uses ASIO drivers.
After you installed the drivers go to Windows control panel/ Audio Devices and check that the RME is your audio device.
Until you can play audio from Windows Media Player don't even open Sonar.

Hello Cactus, the reason i set it to WDM mode is that when i set it to ASIO in sonar then it come up with a error.
Ok i will try and get the sound working in windows first.
    Thank you

The error was (Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not be support the current project's audio format or may be in use) The one thing that i did was when installing motherboard drives i did not install the realtek audio driver because i thought it would interfere with sonar.

you need to untick any other sound cards that may be listed to get ASIO mode..

e..g onboard one.. scroll thru the list of in / outs .. and see if anything else none RME is listed, and untick

That message tells you that your audio device is not set up properly. That was a wise move to eliminate the realteck. That's what I always do.  It seems you'll get it to work fine once Windows is happy. I think your are the point where that is all that is needed, Get Windows to recognize the ASIO drivers and the RME as you sound card.

I run my onboard in tandem with my audio interface. In order to do this without issues, they both need to be online and then go to "Change sound card settings" in Win 7. You will see them both there, and at that point you need to assign the onboard audio as "Set Default"

This will lock Win7 into the onboard audio even when it sees the audio interface power on/off (which I do frequently). That way the interface is always free and clear of Win7 to allow another program (i.e. SONAR) to use it in ASIO mode.

What Mettelus say's is only true with some set ups. Plenty of people have both on board and a Audio interface co-existing happily together. But there are also many of us who had to obliterate all signs of our on board audio to get things to work properly.
If your computer is only used for DAW this is not a problem. I disable all windows sounds anyways. There's no need for having 2 sound cards/ 2 sets of speakers anyhow unless you want to proof your songs though cheap computer speakers.

If I turn my audio interface off there is simply no sound. I can turn it back on with Sonar open and Sonar just asks if I wish to use it.
