Sonar X2 in the UK (boxed copy - upgrade)
Would it be a violation of forum rules to mention where I am purchasing my (upgrade) boxed copy of X2? I’m not connected with the company (although I have bought from them before), I just thought that sharing the information might help out some other British buyers but I don’t want to risk being banned if it is viewed as advertising or something prohibited. If someone official can confirm it’s ok, I’d be grateful. Thanks! Edit: As others have now posted the link, I thought I'd move it up to the first post (I've ordered a boxed copy for less than the download would have cost me): http://www.etcetera.co.uk/cgi/show_bycategory.pl?manu=Cakewalk&class=1

You can say where you got it from. On their own site they tell you to freely use 'retailers worldwide while supplies last.' They supply the stores who then sell it on at their own price.

Just had a look at two of the biggest on-line retailers Digital Village and Dolphin Music and they are advertising all the full X2 versions, but not the upgrade.

Certainly, they always have the boxed stuff and upgrades. Usually more options than other retailers.

It was etcetera I was going to mention, I've used them in the past and they're selling the boxed upgrades to X2. I'm not sure who else is selling upgrades in the UK and while I didn't have a problem downloading X1 (maybe I was lucky, I know some people have had problems with downloads), getting a boxed copy for less than the download sounds good to me.

I think a few of us went for the Strings lib offer. I'd have liked the box, but well £25.. is a bit too much , say £12-18 would have changed my mind. UK is pretty good download wise, well assuming you have a decent tarriff as well. They all want our custom currently , so won't be too quick to complain. unlike the old days when BT "anytime" didn't mean that

A physical upgrade before 31 October qualifies: http://www.cakewalk.com/page.aspx/Free-DSF-Symphonic-Strings-HD-with-SONAR-X2-Producer-purchase I can't wait for FTTC to reach me (hopefully this year), I find my current ISP disappointing of late.

That's a good price from Etcetera, and I would imagine that with P&P added it would still be cheaper than the download price.

oops... actually, I'm wrong with my previous statement. I think I paid £79 for my upgrade from X1 Producer Expanded to X2 Producer (I say think... I've just been into my store account and it has disappeared from my history). But it must still be handy to have the media, which costs another £25 on top of the download. Still, I've made my choice, and I'm happy with that :)

Some people like to download, some like to have a box, it's always good to have a few options to choose from. Jackie

That's strange, because I clicked on the link above for the Etcetera site and it is priced as £85 to upgrade from X1 Producer to X2 Producer. I couldn't check what the P&P was because you need to enter a valid serial number before you can add that item to your shopping cart and I gave up at that point... S'only a couple of quid anyway. Are you getting it then?

Are you getting it then? Yeah, I've placed my order. Bizarrely, the link to click to upgrade from Producer Expanded (£69 +P&P) is the fourth one down the list on this page: http://www.etcetera.co.uk/cgi/show_bycategory.pl?manu=Cakewalk&class=1 You're right that an upgrade from Producer to Producer is £85, but I'm upgrading from Producer Expanded. P&P was £6 for me (UK mainland). Hey, you got to play with X2 before anyone else did (and yes it's only a few quid), so it's all good, right? By the way, how is X2 Producer? How does it compare to X1 Producer Expanded? Much of an improvement? I've been trying to work out what's new and improved from websites and forum posts! Jackie

Doh! I missed that! Sorry. And at first I thought I'd missed something there, but I paid £79 for the X1 Producer Expanded to X2 Producer upgrade, whereas the X1 Producer to X2 Producer was £99. I'm glad I cleared that up in my little head. As or X2, and I've said this a number of times over the last few days, I'm over the moon with it really. I had hardly touched X1 though, jumping from Sonar 6 Producer to X1 in the summer. For me, the highlight is Automation Lanes and they are allowing me to explore that avenue more. I used to find drawing envelopes a bit of a pain previously, but dedicated lanes, and the new draw and edit methods are brilliant in my opinion. I like to create old fashioned synth stuff like Tangerine Dream for instance and being able to tweak all the various parameters in Absynth and Z3ta opens up new avenues for me. I know you've always been able to do this in real time, but I prefer to do this task after I have my main synth tracks down. And that's just one thing. There are other enhancements too, like the way you can draw notes in the PRV now, that make the "composing" process a bit better for me, and the way I work. Yes, I've had a few issues, but as a hobbyist I've not come across any real show stoppers yet. At least with the boxed media you don't have any issues with corrupted download files ;-)

Buying the boxed version from the UK distribution channel is often a better deal than getting a direct download from the Cakewalk store. You usually have to wait a little longer for the stock to appear though. I was a bit slow on the uptake because existing stocks of the £79 upgrade from 8.5 to X1 including the free ESD update to X2 until Oct 31st quickly ran out while I was still dithering. Ah well you win some, lose some. This still works out at £49 cheaper for me with the install media thrown-in than going via the Cake store which makes it a no-brainer really. Any of the usual dealers will price match of course so you'll be able to get it from your favourite supplier at that price.

At least with the boxed media you don't have any issues with corrupted download files ;-) I haven't really made much use of X1 despite having it since release (real life got in the way of music), so I wondered whether upgrading was really worthwhile, but I've gone for it anyway. I was lucky enough to download X1 without any major problems (although I remember installation being quirky despite following the correct order) but having a disc copy for no extra cost is a bonus. I'm quite happy not to have the hassle / run the risk of corrupt download files. My ISP has a fair usage policy so saving my download quota is good too. From what I've read, a lot of the X2 improvements are workflow related or under the bonnet type stuff. I'm a very basic user at the moment, so anything that makes it easier or more straightforward must be a good thing! Jackie

True, although I'm not sure how many retailers are offering the upgrade from X1 Producer Expanded (which was what I needed). The more standard upgrades seem to be more widely available.

most will do it, as it's just the same upgrade box for a fair few products. there isn't that many sellers to choose from anyway, and I find sometimes finding the same unit or whatever from a NONE music maker e.g. a mic, they will normally price match rather than lose a sale.
