Sonar X2 midi channel question

Hi all,

Firstly I'm not sure whether this is a Sonar or a Kontakt issue, so please forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong forum.

My question relates to having two instruments use the same MIDI channel but I only want to hear one of them at a time during MIDI playback and when I record MIDI notes in realtime. Is this possible?

E.g. I'm using a muted trombone patch for the first few bars of a song and then I want to use an open/normal trombone patch for the remainder of the song. With a view to saving on MIDI channel usage I've assigned them both to the same channel but I'm hearing both instruments play at the same time. Is there a way around this?

Many thanks,
Chris
