Sonar X3 and Roland XV-5080 expansion board crisis

HI  - apologies if I am posting in the wrong area - I am new to Cakewalk -

I hope someone can help - who has a Roland  XV5080 sound Module I would assume would be best to assist

I have a Roland XV-5080 with 8 expansion slots all filled as per below
Expansion Cards
A: SR-JV80-08 60&70
B: SR-JV80-19 HOUSE
C: SR-JV80-04 SYNTH
D: SR-JV80-05 WORLD
E: SRX-01 DYNAMIC DRUMS
F: SRX-02 CONCERT PIANO
G: SRX-06 COMPLETE ORCHESTRA
H: SRX-10 BIG BRASS ENSEMBLE

I have downloaded the Roland Instrument file and have successfully been able to assign midi channels 1 - 16 to the above including the XV-5080 standard out of the box sounds and Drums

Where I am having a problem is that when I define any channel to the expansion cards above in red A - D (only these) and I select the sound I want it defaults to the XV5080 General Midi Patches -

Sonar does identify all the XV5080 presets as well as the SRX expansions cards and I can change theses accordingly

It doesn't matter if I change the Output/Channel for 1-16 to the different XV-default or expansion cards - its only the SR-JV80 ones that default to GM

Any help would really be appreciated
I am using an Alesis Q88 midi controller keyboard

    If I had to guess, I would say that the midi implementation for the JV cards is slightly different than for the SRX cards. You will likely need to edit the Roland Instrument file (it's just a text file, really) and change the midi messages that Sonar needs to send to the 5080 to match what is expected. The midi implementation charts are in the back of the 5080 manual, and there may be addendums that came with the individual cards.

    Sonar doesn't actually recognize anything...it simply displays whatever is in the instrument file. It doesn't know you have a 5080 specifically.

    Regards,

    See this here on how to do it http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep12/articles/sonar-0912.htm
    and here http://tweakheadz.com/how-to-build-a-cakewalk-ins-file/
    and here https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013272/Instrument-Definitions

    And here has the definition prepared for you http://www.lilchips.com/roland.htm does not cover you XV-5080 but you should be able to use the files provided edit them in note pad and import into SONAR.

    Hope that helps

    Thank You Dan and Wookie - I appreciate the help and all the links

    As very new to midi and all things I will need to really read my manuals properly - and search the web
    Wow - all very confusing but the links you provided really helped
    What I managed to work out was the MSB:LSB Calculation was incorrect in the default ins file- I managed to work out how to edit this in the "Patch Names for Banks" in Sonar - and all good for my first expansion card

    Just another question - how do I apply this in the master .ins file that I import?

    Many many thanks again

    What I established - and I hope this will help other XV-5080 users (probably very few as it is an old sound module)
    Is that the default Roland *.ins file for the SR-JV series of expansion boards applies to the JV-1010, 1080, 2080, XP-30, XP-50/60/80

    This I worked out from the link from "Wookie"

    Example for the Roland SR-JV80-05 World for the 1080
    Patch[10752]=Roland SR-JV80-05 World 001-128
    Patch[10753]=Roland SR-JV80-05 World 129-255

    However for the XV-5080 it is as follows
    Patch[11398]=Roland SR-JV80-05 World 001-128
    Patch[11399]=Roland SR-JV80-05 World 129-255

    Thanks all once again - I'll slowly get my head around all the other

    Using the Instrument definition route you import the information into the Master.ins file this is the safest way to go. Create your Roland definition in a file called something like Roland.ins and then import that file. If you are feeling really brave you can edit the Master.ins file in notepad, but whatever you do if you go this way make a backup of that file first.

    Thanks Wookie

    Great advise as I was overwriting the ins files while trying to work it out and it got a bit all over the place
    - so have a copy of the default ins files and then my amended ones saved with proper naming so i can identify

    All looking good as I have all 8 expansion boards working now (SRX and SR JV) with the help you and provided

    Cheers

    As Wookie said, always make a backup of the Master.ins as well as any separate files you may be working on. If you ever need to reinstall, you'll be glad you have them.

    No problem only glad I could help, I can remember the fun and games I had when I first got my JV1080, I had to manually create the definition file for it as it was so new that there were no files available but then that was back in the days of Cakewalk Pro audio.
