Sonar X3 and Sonar 6 crashing on one song at 96%
Hi! I'm having the above issue just as I finished my track! Typical! It starts to load (in either prog vers) and gets to 96% every time and just crashes out. (Reports are below) The latest things I did to the track was use v-vocal on a few recordings (but bounced the clips as far as I remember) and I used Limiter 6 plug-in to try a bit of mastering out. Sonar X3 rendered the track nicely but I wanted to tweak a few things today and now have this on-going issue. I tried safe mode on both progs, excluded all plugs but...still the same. Tried excluding most plugs but still the same. I checked event viewer and it shows the info below and along with the Sonar.exe crash warning I get a DeltaII (s/card) warning also although they are a few minutes apart. I can load my other tracks fine! and I'm almost positive I have used v-vocal and limiter 6 fine before with no probs. One other thing I did was I moved my track location from a folder on desktop to inside another folder last week. When I went to open the song after doing this Sonar obviously said it couldn't find it so I manually opened it via Sonar open file at start menu and directed it to the new location which opened fine and loaded fine a few times since then (I have tried reversing this process but no joy) I also installed sound-forge 9 and fruity loops 10 recently. Last night I rendered a wav and slipped it in sforge to boost vol and convert to mp3. I plugged my Sony Experian phone in and copied the mp3 over. Turned off PC and tried to open the song today and felt my guts sink!!! grrr!!! p.s. I use a mix of vsts/plugs and jbridge. All seemed to work fine. All other songs are totally fine to open and use.
Any help, ideas, salvation! would be greatly appreciated :)

you might have a corrupted wav file (from the vvocal track?). Copy the whole project to a different folder, delete the last couple of wav files in the audio folder and see if it loads. I have no idea if that will be it, but it's a thought.

Hey Jimbo, I tried what you suggested and one by one they didn't make a difference :/ I even deleted all the recordings from yesterday but no joy. Exact same crash. Wondering if the song file is corrupt. I will do a disk and file check now as suggested by Bitman. Absolutely gutted if this doesn't recover. I have an older version of the song but I did a lot of work yesterday to complete it...sigh! Curious as to whether V-Vocal has caused this.

Still no joy! No errors on file system and disk. I did recovery to a few days ago, removed SF9 and fruity Loops. Removed C++. I tried V-Vocal on another track, bounced and saved, all fine! Nightmare! I should have made a backup :/ Any other ideas....anyone?

Try saving as a bundle file, then unpacking that to a new folder. That should strip off transient data and the V-Vocal FX regions if there are any hidden in the file.

Ouch, my bad, I missed that detail. I am not sure if you can save one if the project won't load.
If it is V-Vocal in the project file, and option would be to copy the project to a new directory, but NOT copy over the last wav files you edited. SONAR will then tell you you have missing audio, but do not find them... If SONAR doesn't load a wav to process against, the V-Vocal data might strip off, then you can save the project with a new name and import to original wav file (if that works). Edit: Moved to the post below.

I logged into the computer to type an edit to the above post, but you already read the original. If it is V-Vocal in the project file, an option would be to copy the project to a new directory, but NOT copy over the last wav files you edited (leave those in the original location). SONAR will then tell you that you have missing audio, but do not find them... If SONAR doesn't load a wav to process against, the V-Vocal data might strip off, then you can save the project with a new name and import to original wav file (if that works).

There's a possibility it could be plugin issue. I've heard of reports of Sonar losing plugin settings - maybe it's corrupting them in this case and crashing it. It's a long shot (and probably a huge PITA), but what you could try is rename your plugin directories and do a re-scan to effectively remove your plugins, then load your project. If your project loads, then you know it's one of the plugins that is causing the issue. The time consuming part will be copying each plugin DLL back one by one to isolate the one that is causing the issue (note however, that there's a chance that it maybe affecting more then one plugin if it is a corruption issue, so make sure you've nailed down all the problem ones).

Actually on second thoughts, just using Sonar's plugin manager to disable plugins might be easier than renaming directories. It'll be much easier to add them back in as well.

Hi Not sure if this would work, but maybe worth a try:- Copy the project folder and paste it back with a new name e.g. "safe-backup" (this will prevent any accidental harm happening to your original) Create a new project (with a new name) eg "myamazingsongrecovery.cpl" Import the audio tracks one at a time (from the copy you just made eg "safe-backup") and test by playing to the end before importing the next audio track, hopefuly everything will work, if not, you may be able to identify a bad audio file if there is one.

Yip, tried everything with the plug-ins. Safe mode, disable on start, removed directories and used only one basic. Still happening :/ Thanks though...

Thanks. I started doing this last night. It seems to work so far but I have 30 tracks and hundreds of audio files (loadsa plugs) so it's one damn arduous task that is the final option I will try once I've exhausted all other possibilities. When I worked on the song the other day I simply removed some old vocals on one track and re-did them. I also used v-vocal to clean them up and bounced them. I added a new track for an extra small vocal part, tweaked the mix, bounced one or two other wavs and then I used Limiter 6 to master. Up until that point and a few days prior, I could go into the project no problems. I'm left with a juicy rendered wav and mp3s which is something but yea, I'd love to just be able to get back to the project and work a little more on it and also make an instrumental version. Grrrr! I should have backed up!

I know you said you tried safe mode but Have you made sure to open in Safe mode and not use any plug ins ? What happens when you try to open a new project with no tracks and no plug ins ? Safe mode will typically open anything. Windows update install anything lately ? TheyMadeMonsters

And how did you do this without being able to open the project ? Also which limier 6 ? TDR Limiter 6 ? or Vladg's ?

Hi, I just opened X3 without any project and edited the prefs by taking the tick out of 64-bit double precision. Yup, I tried safe mode a number of times on both Sonar 6 & X3. I tried one by one with plugs and no to all plugs, still hangs on 96%. I copied the entire project to a new dir, deleted my latest wavs from the other day (which seems to have caused the issue) but still happens. I even deleted older wavs going back quite some time but still no joy! Limiter is Vladg's. The only 'new thing' I did was v-vocal to tidy up a couple of recordings and put limiter 6 on the main to try out the plug. I used limiter before on this project and have an old mp3 of it so it was fine. V-vocal worked fine with no crashes and I bounced the wavs.

I have a similar feeling although I have used it in other projects with no major issues (maybe one or two crashes). I made a new project earlier and imported a few of the wavs from the corrupt project. I used v-vocal and bounced. Put Limiter 6 on also and it all worked fine o.O Why would v-vocal be such an arse to my finished track yet not my unfinished ones!? I just don't get it...

Nothing whatsoever. I did add my Sony Eperian phone to USB so I could transfer the mp3 and have a listen. That's the very last thing I did before turning the PC off. Will take a look at uninstalling that if there is anything there to uninstall.
